Mac Mini 1.5ghz - Won't boot off provided 9.2.2 CD image
« on: February 10, 2020, 09:56:14 AM »
I have a Mac Mini 1.5ghz with 512mb of ram. I've downloaded a couple different versions of the unsupported G4 9.2.2 iso and have burned them to disc. I used a Mac Pro running 10.14 to burn the image via Finder's burn image option when right clicking the image.

Upon booting the Mini with the disc in the drive, holding down C just results to it booting to a gray screen, nothing on it at all, and its internal fan slowly ramping up to max speed.

The CD as far as I can tell is fine. Putting it in another computer, or the Mini itself while booting into OS X shows all its contents just fine.

Is there a step I am missing to complete the process of getting the image onto a CD?

Insert disc.
Shut down.
Restart, holding down the OPTION key.
If the disc does not show up as a bootable disc (after some time)
then other steps may be necessary. [Or yer burn is bad.]
Good luck. ;)

the "unsupported" is the wrong OS.

there is a special OS for the mac mini, as this machine requires modified graphics drivers and ROM.

this happens quite often.

i think we should rename the "unsupported" OS to "all MDD and some powerbooks" OS. :)

Thanks for the replies. Between my post and now I made some progress but have also had setbacks.

I stumbled upon Ross's V8 ISO file, burned that to disc and got it to boot. However, each time I finally got to the Finder, the mouse would shoot to the right side of the screen and refuse to move. Booting with extensions disabled allowed mouse usage and I was able to use the utility to initialize the hard drive and install the V8 of 9.2.2.

Great! Booted off the HD perfectly fine. Mouse even worked correctly.

Where I'm at now: I installed USB Overdrive and now the mouse is back to rocketing back to the right side of the screen every single boot up.

The ISO you guys have linked to, is it different than this Ross V8 ISO? The post I found it in is here:

Honestly, such a flurry of posting on this subject that I don't remember.
Best approach would be to read back through that thread and find the most recent V.8 mentioned.
THAT would be the latest. (And rumors of a newer update, coming soon.)  ;)

I went ahead and downloaded both of them, and they have matching md5 checksums. So it's safe to say they are identical.

USB Overdrive seems to enjoy killing my ability to use a mouse. Disabled it and each reboot so far doesn't permanently stick my mouse to the right side of the screen. Shame, scrolling and right click would be nice to have! Not quite sure where to go with this one, poking through posts here isn't turning up too much.

minor issues with mouse.... are known. solution is on the way.

for now try using another mouse, eventually an older or cheaper one with a lesser resolution.

my cheap logitech M 100 give me a freeze once per week, which is normally repaired with reconnecting the usb cable.

some people have more problems, other no at all.

p.s.: because i using my mouse & keyboard with 3 different macs, i have USB extension cables lying direclty behind  the keyboard. (i do the same with midi and audio for 2 of them) maybe an idea for mini users with mouse problems?

So I guess that's what you'd call a 'manual switcher'! ;D

Is that less problematic than some sort of KVM switch rig??

it is cheaper and more flexible (smaller). and i dont need "monitor".
i´ve just sticked three usb "breakouts" from 3 machines together with cable tie.

Went searching for the oldest USB mouse I could that had a scroll wheel and right click, found a Logitech optical wheel mouse. Seems this solved the "Stuck to the right" issue with USB Overdrive enabled!

Messing around with Unreal Tournament in OS 9 is getting me wanting to dig my beastly 9600/300 out of mothballs and see if that 700 mhz G4 upgrade and Voodoo 4 5500 are both still kicking.

So aside from the obvious known issues, like dodgey mouse support and very low audio volume, this seems to be quite the successful experiment.
