DVD Audio Skips Under OS 9 Using DVI-D, but not VGA

Hello all,

On my Power Macintosh G4 Sawtooth I notice that if I play a DVD on OS 9 while hooked up to my monitor's DVI-D port, the audio will skip.  This doesn't happen when the mac is hooked up to the VGA port.  Anyone know why this is?  DVD playback via DVI-D is fine under OS X 10.4.11. 

The specs of my machine are as follows:
1.5 ghz CPU upgrade
2 GB RAM
Radeon 9000 AGP video card

i watched the first DVD i ever downloaded back in 1999 on a sawtooth G4;
Phantom Menace Star Wars 1999
it took 2-3 days to download;
i was totally amazed when it actually began to play and i was watching a new star wars film for the first time in eons
watchign it on a small CRT monitor connected to the sawtooth; via AGP Rage 128 pro
i was amazed the computer could even play it;

thats a strange issue you are dealign with; have u got any other video cards to see if it does the same thing with another model radeon or geforce?

Funny you should say that.  I'm actually using Episode II as my test DVD.

I tried both my 64 MB and 128 MB Radeon 9000s and they both have the same issue.  I put in the Rage 128 Pro that originally came with this Mac and no problems playing DVDs via DVI.  That particular card has some rust on the DVI port so I'm only using it temporarily.  Looks like I'll have to buy another card.  Any suggestions?  My reason for upgrading from the Rage was partly due to the rust and partly to help out the OS X side of my G4 (There's 2 HDDs: one with OS 9 and one with OS X).

you might consider a radeon 8500. i find it to be the best for my sawtooth; pretty sure its better than the 9000 even tho its a lower number in its model number  and it has the most comprehensive software support/driver support that ive seen for macos9

the problem could be because of hardware differences between sawtooth + later models QS/MDD that the 9000 was made for, does your 9000 have ADC port? thers alot of stuf like that that "kinad works" but not '100% rock solid works" because of differences in design between g4s tahts why some people have no problems at all with their configs and other people have nothign but problems because they are using hardware that, while it is compatible technically, was designed to work with different model specifically;

it was only after years of dealign with that kind of slight incompatibility bullshit headaches that i now lean toward using the actual restore disks for each specific mac aswell.. just to eliminate the possibility of having software/hardware quirks + incompatibilities; when the macs came int he box packaged with the right dvd they were tested + Q&A'd to perform 100% and i believe that they did so via many tweaks + customizations that apply to each specific mac model

your sawtooth was probably made in the latter part of the year 2000 or early 2001. Radeon 8500 is a good fit for it + is leaps + bounds above the rage 128 pro speed + performance + software support wise. the 9000 didnt come out untll  yars later im pretty sure.. and it was based on the 8500 pretty sure. cut down version of it.

8500 = r200 chip
9000 = r300 chip? or is it RV250? or RV200?

anyways - i bet you the 8500 would work perfectly
perhaps an even better match would be a first gen radeon or a first gen geforce card

wasnt  there a mac driver for the Matrox g400?

i bring up the matrox card because i was OBSESSED with my matrox graphics card around that time 1999-2001 period

So, it turned out that the problem was the resolution that the Radeon 9000 was set to.  My monitor supports a max resolution of 1280x1024 and the Radeon 9000 was set to that after I installed the latest ATI drivers.  If I change the resolution to something lower, the skipping doesn't occur.
