any users are using linked 2 x (8x8) midi interfaces?
« on: June 27, 2018, 12:19:04 PM »
as many of you know its possible to network up to two 8x8 opcode/motu midi interfaces per serial port
a friend of mine recently got his 128x working with his studio 4 to have 16 midi ports in and out off a single serial port

ANYONE else here are using this type of advanced midi configuration?

yes, i have two MOTU MTP AV USBs networked this way. On one end I have my main DAW which is a hackintosh, the other end is my MDD OS9 mac with a bunch of cards including a Korg OASYS. the two are also linked via ADAT. What's fun is that when you use it in this config, the machine at the other end of the chain effectively becomes a 17th midi port, and you can route data to and from the two machines, so i can for example use my hackintosh DAW to send clock sync and midi data to the OASYS., or my controller keyboard to trigger anything on the MDD.

ive recently been considering trying to do sequencing from the MDD since i learned on Studio Vision Pro and I think it would be fun to revisit.

way back in the day I also used that same setup as your friend, with a studio 128x networked to a studio 4. worked like a dream.

the emagic interfaces allowed you to network even more, I believe up to 8 units for 1024 channels.

thats interesting about the 17th port etc

im assuming one of the MTP's u have is a USB MTP AV? and it uses USB to attach to the hackintosh?

they are both USB MTP AVs. USB to the MDD, and USB to the hackintosh. the two MTPs are connected via mac din8 serial cable over their "Net" ports.

i also have a beige g3 which I was planning on hooking up to one of the MTPs as well to test how well it works over serial.

i have a producer friend in long island nyc who has done tests and hes much happier with his performance over serial port than over usb

he swears it just is more instantaneous + responsive + faster

i'd believe it. part of my thread over in the troubleshooting threads is related to this. i wanted to get the beige g3 fully up and running so I could integrate it into the setup over serial instead of USB. but i needed a way to get files on/off easily and also not have to keep using a silly ADB roller mouse. once that replacement card comes in and hopefully works i'll be able to get it done.

Yes.. jamport works like a charm with 2 Studio4, along with 2 USB emagic for 8x4=32 MIDI lines

yes, i do have a stealth port in my DP500 actually. i tried putting it into my MDD, but i am not sure if it worked correctly in there.
