How to burn akai library's MO image to CD?
« on: June 13, 2018, 09:46:15 AM »
Hi!
I have an image of a 230 Mb magneto optical disk with an Akai library made with Hard Disk Toolkit.
I want to burn it to CD to free up the MO disk.
However, CD comes out of Toast 5.1.4 unreadable. Most probably because of the different sector sizes: 512 b/s on MO, 2048 on CD.
Has anyone managed to overcome this?
Thanks!

i´ve no clue about MOs attached to samplers, but a sector size of 2018 is correct for akai - and it is normal that macos can not read these disks without some help of third party apps. try a sampleing app or your hwardware samplers to see if it is a valid akai volume.

It's valid: I made it myself with my Akai S-2000.
I understand that I need burning software with some kind of sector align function.
I am now trying Macdisk. But it's demo. I don't know if I'll manage to burn the CD.
Any other suggestions?

ok when it is made with the hardware sampler than it is a DOS volume, right? to my knowledge that cant be converted to an akai CD easily.

the only solution for Mac PPC which can read arbitrary MOs and write akai (S5000) is CDXtract. on windows, xtreme can do it, too.

but connect directly with SCSI if you can, if you make an image of the MO first that adds another error source.

ok, thanks. I'll try CDxtract.
But I need to have a burned CD which I'll be able to use in the future. I don't accept any other options.
So I need a burning software that will align sectors: 512 to 2048.
I know it's possible, people have done it, but wisdom has been lost (they don't remember).
I hope here we can find a solution.

well, converteers like CDXtract will imprt stuff and make it a custom format, then allows to export as some other format.
just like you cant recode mp3 to flac directly, but only via PCM.

burning isnt the problem, the problem is to create the image.

for S5000 you can easily store stuff in .akp nd .pgm format and use a client computer to load it into the sampler, for S-1000 format you can not.

when i remember right, the first version of chicken translator which can actually create image files for akai and emu (in .dmg format) was the mac intel version - PPC is completely out of the game.

Search the forum :)

As discussed many times, HALion (available free here for OS9) will read Akai CDs in their propriety format (but then you will have HALion patches), you will also have the RAW samples readable by importing into other samplers, this all depends on the "end goal", AS mentioned above, chicken will also do the trick, even the OS 9 version, but that seems to be gone for OS9 and the author or it wants to keep it that way

Thanks guys!
Just to remind you: all I need is a CD-R that will be readable by my Akai S-2000. At the moment  have this sample library on a 230Mb MO disk. S-2000 sees it. I made an image by FWB in OS9. But if I burn this image onto CD, then S-2000 can't see it.
I was told this was due to different sector sizes (512 b/s in MO format and 2048 on CD). Does anyone know how to conduct an alignment procedure? Which burning software has this function?

none. :)
you must create your custom akai CD image file with chicken sytems translator (no other app can do this); then you can burn this image file with every burning app you like (including on OS9)
