ATI 9800Pro 128MB w/ G4
« on: May 04, 2018, 12:56:48 AM »
Hi all,
I've recently acquired an ATI Radeon 9800Pro 128MB in order to install it to my G4 (I think it's the sawtooth model).
Do I need to perform some kind of mod or reflash to make it work or it's compatible as it is?
My card is the one pictured below.

there is a low chance that it might be that you dont need to flash it to mac - but most likely you need to.

and it is a 8x AGP card, so you would have to tape it to make it work in a G4.

i had one running in an MDD, but broke the taping one day.

disable -3 and -11 like so

p.s. eventually the DVI wont work.
the VGA will always work on a 9700/9800, as well as the 3d accelleration/openGL.

i have 2 radeon 9800 pros -- one in my g5 + and one in my MDD --
one of them is flashed, the other is a REAL mac edition radeon 9800 pro
i also own a sawtooth which ive used it with many times, so i think i know what im talking about

unfortunately this card does not support proper 2D accell in mac os 9
it would be amazing to get someone to hack the 2D accell to work for any graphics card powered by the R300 series GPU chips
but this has not yet been accomplished by anyone as far as i know

the card is so fast that its almost usable but if you are doing any real work on the os
you will soon get frustrated with the screen-rollup-refresh that occurs when 2d Accell is not enabled/supported

so it will "work" for mac os9 but not "work well" - untill the r300 series driver support is achieved for mac os 9 these cards
are only really usefull for osx panther, tiger, leopard on G4's + G5s.

the radeon pro is AGP 8x yes but it is downward compatible with 4x + more importantly 2x
so it works on the sawtooth without any mods or pins taped

I thought pin taping was only required when installing such cards into motherboards with ADC-capable slots, which the Sawtooth doesn't have.  Gigabit Ethernet G4 through MDD do.  The conflicting pins are non-spec-compliant use by Apple for their proprietary ADC scheme.  Those pins are unused in the Sawtooth AGP slot.

Chris was right about the taping, and we do NOT want incorrect info:, so Mac OS Plus confirmed, Sawtooth does NOT need taping

Also, it seems that different sites on the Web have this card as an 8x, and others as a 4X...which would matter for MDD

I have owned this card years ago, and it does NOT look like the original picture posted...

Chris, what does your card look like, mine was this style
