Looking for the simplest midi interface for se/30
« on: April 06, 2018, 07:09:32 AM »
I just want to communicate with a synth. Passing samples to it. I have an opcode studio 4. (up for sale on reverb btw).

Too complicated for my needs. I have a macnexus from jlcooper, and another old serial to midi interface, but im not sure if these things use OMS. and whether I need OMS to use these things. Like in sound designer passing sounds to my synth.

My Se/30 is being fixed, so I can't test it. I hope someone can make sense of my post.
basically, do I need OMS? Do I need a proper sound card/box running O<MS to use sound designer with my synth. Or will these old serial to midi interfaces being enough. Thanks!

there is no reason why you should not add OMS to a computer running 7.5.5. it only adds functionality, you can still use apps with midimanager in parallel. sounddiver will only support 68k up to v.2.x.

I have an opcode studio 4... I have a macnexus from jlcooper

I remember some jlcooper stuff from the 90s needed an extension to work properly, not sure if the macnexus is one of those, but they don't seem to have any docs about it in their legacy hardware site.

the opcode studio 4 is about as solid and easy to use as it gets.  is it just a size thing?  the macnexus IS much smaller, so i get that.  but the studio 4 is like having a honda civic or a VW beetle, it may not be pretty but there are a million out there if you need service/parts for it and it has a good reputation for reliability.

and yes, get OMS.  what sampler are you dumping to from SD?  you might also want to get turbosynth 2

the se/30 was released January 19, 1989
it was during this time that alot of sound modules included a "To host " port that alot of people connected straight to
the mac se or se/30 serial port but  any mac serial interface is going to work on an se/30 as far as i know?

see my websites section here:
http://www.oldschooldaw.com/forums/index.php/board,84.0.html

i think a great match for an se/30 is the Opcode Studio 3 interface
http://www.oldschooldaw.com/forums/index.php/topic,2030
which was released the same year as the se/30
i bought mine with the intention of pairing it with an se/30
but the se/30 is a tought machine to score nowadays

if i were u i would just use that studio 4 that you already have
heres a video for you

ok sorry i thought he was going to show a working midi interface but i guess not

MIDIMAN Mini MacMan MIDI Interface for Macintosh

This baby is solid steel and super basic... one of my all-time favorites with pre-G3 Macs

does the MIDIMAN Mini MacMan need OMS? I just bought so ill find out. I have a small collection of serial to midi interfaces.
The opcode 4 has two largish manuals. Im super tired of reading manuals at the moment. but id I have to.

Im using a mirage sampler. I have everything for it. Dick lords tuning library. Soundprocesses OS, which im gong to use the most I think, I have the editor for classic Macs. I have a huge sound library from the emulator II sampler. So, lots of work to make new sounds.

I love turobosynth.  version 2.0 has serial link to mirage and other samplers.
My Mac se/30 is getting recapped. But I have that and the big mess of wires floppy emulator.

Basically, Id love to avoid reading the opcode manuals and just have a simple serial communication to the mirage

do yourself a favour and dont purposely avoid reading manuals
they are there for your benefit.. not your hassle.
for reference purposes..

dont be afraid to open them up if u arent certain of details!
if theres something u dont understand in the manual just ask
on the forums + someone can help u get a better grasp on it!

the more the basics are reinforced the higher level of skill can be aquired
thats what i believe anyway

having a good understanding of oms is only going to work in your favour!

No, but, depending on OS or application, it might require Apple MIDI Manager.
If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

I can't believe I'm saying this but…I actually agree with macStuff.

Just for the record:
1) OMS is ridiculously easy to use - plug everything in and one click on OMS setup does everything automatically.
2) The Studio 4 has only one manual, most of which pertains to more advanced functions you say you don't need to use anyway.
3) If you have "a collection of serial to MIDI interfaces", why buy yet another?
