8/1/1997 was the date for 3.5 version, I guess it was Summer 1997, the world still used floppy disks..

i guess Cubase 4 (Macintosh) was the first version without the auth floppy requirement

Not the first, although it was a significant move in 1998.

Portables like the HP OmniBook and PowerBook 100 had made the floppy drive an external dongle for years.

I think the really significant aspect of the iMac was no floppy drive in a desktop computer. HP did that in 1983 with the Touchscreen Model 150, where all mass storage, floppy or hard drive, was in separately purchased HP-IB attached boxes. You could boot a 150 from a hard drive box without a floppy drive, although I suspect that very few were used that way. It's also arguable if you can call the 150 a "PC", since it was only MS-DOS compatible, not register-level compatible with the IBM PC, as the industry later settled on.

By 1998, floppies were mostly dead as a software distribution format, helped by the increased affordability of CD-R. USB was also mature enough to provide external floppy capability for those who required it. The first iMac was kind of crippled, though, as USB 1.1 "Full Speed" was not exactly what you would want for external hard drives. It was fast enough for writing CD-Rs using the 4-6X speeds common at the time.

In 1998, I was still using floppies to transfer files to/from the Computer Lab machines at college, because it was simple and compatible. USB thumb drives weren't available until 2000!

The problem with Cubase v4 that was moved to CD is that is still requires a "Challenge" "response" code, if you don't have a Floppy, then go for V4.1r2, no floppy or challenge response code needed

Howvever, I always recommend CuBase VST 5/32 that we have here:

The cool thing about this toast image is that is will burn a "perfect" copy of the original version 5 CD; it re-creates the extra blocks at the end of CD just like the original, many other images will fail the authorization check, this one will pass. So, this version is kinda like the holy grail, pinacle, zenith, etc version of Cubase under OS9.  I know we have discussed this to death, but CuBase VST 5/32 has very, very few bugs and I personally ran it for many over 10 hours sessions without a single crash.  Also, features like true tape, solid MIDI timing, low latency ASIO, and reliable automation make it my favorite DAW ever for OS 9.

One quick note from the download page...

In order to install, you must first burn the toast image to an actual CD and leave it in your Optical Drive and let it mount on the desktop.  Do NOT run the CD (it is Version 5.0), Use the updated Version 51r1 Installer and launch it while keeping the burnt CD mounted (this will authorize the updated version and install it). DO NOT stop the install, it will take a long time for the authorization to finalize. Use the serial number above when installing.

So, by using the 5.1r1 install on a fresh build and having the 5.0 cd mounted, you can quickly go to the best version, all authorized, in one easy step

There was no Cubase with audio before version 3. With v.3 regular Cubase (MIDI only), Cubase VST and Cubase XT were released. XT was for Digidesign hardware and required DAE/DSI.

Nope, there was a patch for 3.0.4 at a time. As well as patches for VST and MIDI versions. It might even have been the same patch for all three versions. You obviously haven't been around for long.. And, why on earth you're keep asking for ISO ?! That's non native Mac format and not how the software was originally released. It came either on floppies or as .sit / .sea / .hqx / .bin or .img file downloads.

Cubase Audio was also referrenced as "Cubase Audio for DAE" by Steinberg up until 1998, whereas there are retail boxes saying "Cubase Audio XT for DAE/TDM" in 1995. I'm still trying to wrap my head around since, information is sparse.

Oops! My mistake. Haven't seen these, to be honest. I've switched over to Mac from Atari 1040 around Cubase 2.5-> 3.0 transition and never looked at audio options. Way too expensive. Analog multitrack was the tool for the job.

So the confusion is apparent because it was called "Cubase Audio", "Cubase Mac Audio" and supposedly supported the Yamaha CBX-D5 as well (what else...), at least according to a Yamaha manual.
Later or meanwhile designated versions were released
"Cubase audio for DAE" is at least referenced, i havent come across a box foto or anything so far.
"Cubase audio xt for dae/tdm" exclusively for digidesign hardware

Information is scarce and any input from dear forum members with originals from that time will immensly help put the picture together.

thats btw the first GUI of Steinberg FX Collection Vol. 1 (Pandora, Stereo Wizard, Hallelujah!, Plate Runner) on the net, since 1997. I do not have the original box for FX Collection, sadly, yet, but i'm betting it was coded by Spectral Design as well (along others like Time Bandit, they only later started mentioning them, but Spectral Design was along from 1991 up until OS 9). i cant take a look into the code of the plugins and my tdm rig is waiting for the one of the 8100s to be repaired.

just admire how ahead of their time steinberg was with what looks like an early version of plugue bidule for the routing.

yes, and they changed the code totally and it doesnt sound anywhere close nor does it measure (yes ive tested them all)
x86 VST, wraps to x64 on PC (i should also mention each plugin costs 900 eur upwards, is officially certified only for wavelab (but wraps even and runs in protools, tested) and involves a personalized hasp dongle) but thats PC territory.

VST And Pro Tools
The PCI/NuBus Power PC/680n0 situation is very complex, and deserves some explanation. Pre‑Power PC Macs cannot run VST, and Macs with PCI expansion slots (all Power Macs now in production) cannot drive existing Pro Tools systems, which require the older NuBus expansion slots. So, what of NuBus Power Macs, such as the 7100, which could conceivably drive a Pro Tools system and run VST software? Sadly, although you might harbour dreams of running TDM processing plug‑ins in conjunction with VST effects and EQ, the two will not run together. Cubase Audio XT is still in existence for Pro Tools owners, and is now being bundled with Cubase Score VST free of charge, so that NuBus Power Mac owners can access VST technology as well as Pro Tools — but only via separate software packages! However, Steinberg's UK distributors Harman say that it should be possible to address the hardware of Digidesign's Audiomedia cards (Audiomedia II for NuBus Macs and the new Audiomedia III for PCI Macs) from VST via the Apple Sound Manager.

this would make sense for me anyways since pro tools nubus hardware can process 24 bit via aes ebu in out but only record in 16bit. both work internally at 32 bit afaik. ill figure it out.

if say you want to send audio from a modern rig into a digidesign 888 -> disk io nubus -> cubase audio 3.05 xt process with nubus only tdms in there -> apple sound manager -> sum and print in cubase vst 3.5 at 24bit and enjoy vintage vst plugins. of course sending it to a G4 running os9 would be the cooler thing, but i like to tinker and see whats the utmost possible technologically

regarding Cubase Audio 1.x and 2.x, I'm waiting for a box cover foto of a dear member who has v2.0. but i assume it simply was called CUBASE AUDIO. and then stickers on the retail boxes or prints even said which hardware it supported. as technological and licensing wise that was a moving target (cubase and digital performer were the only DAWs that were licensed to use CBX-D5 for instance, but thats on windows, not PC). Ive read CUBASE AUDIO DAE a lot, it might just be CUBASE AUDIO 1.x/2.x for DAE. maybe i can find out if a version of cubase audio already supported Pro Tools TDM.

I think they went from single precision floating point (binary32) to double precision floating point (binary64) over time, so, probably rewritten. It would be very hard to sell anything less than double precision at their prices to anyone these days.
Also, don't mix up 32/64 bit host issue, where plug-ins can be "wrapped", with processing precision.
