Ati Radeon 9200 Retail CD?
« on: January 21, 2018, 03:42:34 AM »
Anyone have the retail CD that shipped with a 9200 Mac Edition?

If someone would be so kind as to post it on a well known Mac Repository nVflash might bring you something nice for Christmas.

i suggest you search the forum - this topic has been discussed before!  8)
you will find many threads i think
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?action=search2

i dont think anyone has ever posted the original cd though?
just the driver files that were distributed by ATI themselves online;

personally i had issues with the 9200 drivers so much that i stay away from using the 9200.
because the driver is always just a pain in the ass to deal with; (ie enabling disabling extensions, rebooting, etc)

for me the radeon 8500 is where its at! but of course its not built into some laptops + emacs,
but its always been ZERO hassle with drivers compared to the 9200

most people i think gravitate towards the 9200 thinking its superior + came out later then the rest;
but the core clock is actually less than the 8500 im pretty sure, as was the memory speed/bandwidth

Bump!

It would be really nice of someone with this CD to upload it.

It contains the last version of the ATI Control Panel for OS 9.

I'd like to be able to modify it to support a few more GPU's.

Thanks MacTron.
Guess I'll reinstall the Radeon 9600 (with pins 3 and 11 taped)
back into an MDD FW800 (with OS 9.2.2 for Unsupported Macs installed)
to eventually test that possible(?) functionality.

I just tried these drivers with my Radeon 9200LE on a Sawtooth booting 9.1 and 8.6.  Confirmed - they work on both these older OS's to enable 2D acceleration, you just have to run the installer on a 9.2.2 system and then copy the files over.  What's interesting is that the versions of some of the extensions are older than the final available versions I've been using for every other card.  This would imply that at least some of the extensions from the 9200 installer have been modifed especially for this software release, and that these changes did not carry forward into the later updates.  It would be nice to know what they actually customized to see if it is possible to integrate these into a common set of extensions that work for all hardware.

I gave it a shot at screwing around with these extensions on the G4 Mini.  This did not do anything helpful, even when applying the OF "Bugsy" hack.  It's hard to tell if there's anything this code can contribute to the Mini project.

Many thanks to MacTron for the download link.

do you have the same 9200LE that i do?
Red PCB? PCI?
flashed or non Flashed?
or are u talking about an AGP 9200LE?
DVI/VGA? or DVI/ADC?

http://lowendmac.com/2004/ati-radeon-9200-mac-edition-pci/

@fury de bongo
the 9600 isnt going to work for 2d accell.
its a    RV350 gpu
u need to stick to RV200/R200 or RV100/R100 Series
9200 is RV280 gpu

it really sucks that they didnt support the 300 series Radeons
i really dont understand why it would have been so hard for them
to write drivers but i guess it wasnt profitable for them to do so..
capitalism ftw

i kind of wish they didnt make so many 9200 variants.. it makes it confusing..
i think thats why i have no problems with the 8500!!
because there wasnt 10 different versions of the 8500..
it was aLWAYS AGP.. and always had 64mb of ram etc
no changing variables... = no headaches ;D
(then again there WAS an 8500LE wasnt there .. lol!)

it would have been better if they never bothered making PRO or LE editions
and just made a standard card that performed well

Thanks McStuff. I'll still give it a whirl. The 9600 works so well under OS X with Dual-DVI outs.
And, it won't require that much time or effort to simply try. ;)

I've also got a questionable 8500 (with visually swollen caps) that leaves on-screen pixel
residue tracking, that I may someday attempt to operate on / repair.

Still, very good news / use... for MOS+ Thanks to MacTron and M.A.R.L. 8)

dual dvi? thats the powermac g5 card? that requires pins3+11 taped/cut?

i had a bad experience trying to tape pins, ill leave that to the more agile + dextrous + brave! i lost a quicksilver 800 trying to put a 9600XT into my quicksilver
now that i think about it.. what a mistake that was. rip QS800;( lol!

but i sure would love to have a Dual DVI Card with proper 2D Accel
dual VGA using dvi-to-vga adapter works in a pinch but for some monitors
DVI connection is much much much more clear.. the monitor im using right now
is an acer, it was so blurry with the vga cable i was about to throw it out before
i realized that it was caused by combination of using VGA connection with a crappy
thinly shielded VGA cable (which was probably getting interference from nearby electronics)

is this pic ive attached accurate to the 9600 you are installing?

Yes. The G5 card. I’ve two of them… one taped, one not.

Perhaps I’m only luckier than you as I stuck the untaped
version into a QS 1GHz and it sparked and began to boot
before I (very) quickly, pulled it right back out.

The QS did not toast and if MacTron’s offering improves
(in any way) the performance of the taped card in OS 9,
I’ll tape (or cut the pin traces), on the untaped card and
reinstall it.

Always seeking a workaround for the ADC prompted,
often two-card necessity for Dual DVI monitor use.

Yes, I have exactly the same card as you, and it is a legit retail model.  One thing that may be different though is the ROM version.  I remember an old thread on this forum where we were trying to help someone solve a problem with making a 1366x768 LCD monitor work properly on a 9200LE. (Not a recommended resolution for Mac nearly ever in my experience).  If I remember correctly, his situation was helped by updating his stock ROM from version 124 to version 127.  My card came with 127 already on it, but you can download it from themacelite.  I don't know if it will make any difference to how you are using your card, but it shouldn't do any harm.

Curiously themacelite site has a version 201 ROM indicated to be from a retail 9200.  It states exactly the same card specs too.  I'm too afraid of screwing up my card with that version to try it myself first, so hopefully some brave soul out there will and report back on whether it makes any difference to compatibility.  Perhaps our new resident connection, darthnVader, can help provide some insight into this.

so you do have the PCI version then..?
im not sure what the rom version is on my card, ill have to investigate

**update
ok i put the 9200LE PCI back in my B+W G3
under apple system profiler/devices
i see the boot rom depicted as:
#113-A27502-124
vram size 128mb!

wow i didnt even know it was that high

You have ROM Ver. 124.

I'm not sure the differences, the newer ROM would be bug fixes, but may have new bugs, while fixing old ones. We can make an 'NDRV' extension from 10.5.8. If it works, that would include an bug fixes for display resolutions not supported in the 204 Rom's 'NDRV'.

Also, there is a 256 MB version of the PCI card, I may order one and see if I can get it to work, but we wouldn't gain much, as in my testing years ago the only real gains 128 vs 256 came in Call of Duty and later OS X games like Doom 3.

I don't think any OS 9 game can benefit from the extra VRam, but it's still cool, and if you're running dual head displays, that would give a 128mb frame buffer for each display.

honestly im in no way desiring 256mb vram
thats overkill for what i need
i didnt even need 128mb i was surprised this card
had that much!

i just want working 2d accell thats it ;)
the card works 100% for the g3 B+W (which im using for os8.6)
i just want 2d accell working in os8.6 + im a happy camper
the card is very fast
so fast that the rollup effect doesnt really bother me that much tbh
(Similar to how it looks when using a radeon 9800 pro on mac os 9)
but when moving lots of windows around it does get too annoying to deal with

i havent been able to burn the cd yet
i tried to download on windows + rename to iso but it wouldnt let me burn it
it said its an invalid iso

MacOsPlus:
did u burn it on os9 with toast ?
what app handles .cdr extension again?

Yes, mine is exact same PCI version, just later ROM.  I simply mounted the .cdr image file on OS X and then copied the OS 9 installer file to my target machine and ran it from there on a 9.2.2 machine.  I then copied the extension set it created to the older OS drives to test under these versions.  Make sure this particular set of extensions stays together and doesn't get mixed with any other files/versions.  It immediately worked properly in a Sawtooth on 8.6 and 9.1.  I don't know if other machine types would have a problem with enabling acceleration.  I'll try it in a B&W and report back.

ok ill duplicate your method 8)

do you think i should re-flash the cards ROM?
is there a 127 update rom somewhere?

if i can get this card working it might just become my favourite GPU :D hehe
for the simple fact that it will work in any machine with a pci slot

As I mentioned, the 127 ROM is available on themacelite:

http://themacelite.wikidot.com/wikidownloads2

Given the extreme lack of trouble I've had with my card, I think the update to 127 would be recommended.  I'm really hoping someone will test the 201 ROM though.

As to machine compatibility, I think this 9200 should work in most situations with 'color-era' powermacs, but I seem to recall my 9500 and 8600 horribly puking on it.  Those machines played much better with Radeon 7000 as a maximum.

well i finally managed to get it working with 2d accel! (with bootrom 124 still)
this is great thanks all

not sure why i had such a problem before.. i think my mistake before was mixing the versions
wheras this time i just grabbed all and saved as "old xtensions" and then dropped ALL the new ones in
