are any iOS discussions allowed on the macos9lives site?

i wanted to ask if anyone has any secret tips on downgrading iOS version on older iOS devices...
for example, i own an Iphone 4s and an Ipad 2 that i *WISH* i could downgrade to a previous version of iOS
i think both are running iOS version 9.xx and they are both very much slower then they used to be in the past...  im wondering if anyone here has any iOS devices from the past (2010/2011/2012)
that they have successfully downgraded

i know its not an easy task but i never really researched if it was possible..
or maybe i was too lazy to take the steps required..

it still bothers me that the new-apple gets away with selling 500$+ devices that dont allow u to downgrade your own device freely.. what a sham

heres an example of the type of videos that can be found on youtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Udy0GzUQebE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2UFZc_v4N4
heres a video that showcases how well ios6 runs on the iphone4s;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMMrqa114qY
heres another video that discusses using ios6 on older ios devices in 2017

another video showing downgrade + jailbreak
apparently it works for ipad 2 aswell!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuWTXNLHgvA&feature=youtu.be

I have an iPad 1, 2 (wife's) and Air2 running IOS 5, 7 and 9.
(a couple of images saved in old iTunes, but unfortunately not the full sequence of releases)
I'm not shure if I could restore old stuff with iTunes disconnected from the net - didn't dare just for fun yet.
Recently had to update my wife's to version 9 for her favourite internet sites refused to work in version 7. It's definitely less responsive, but that seems to be related to context switching mostly, not app performance.

Though IOS is a different thing there are a lot of parallels to classic MacOS, imho it fits quit well to the context of this board. In particular considering it's use in music, which seems a core theme here.
I drive all midi stuff in Pro Tools from either the iPad One or Air-2 and transfer audio snippets between both worlds (much improved by a Synology NAS recently)

Network support (or rather the lack of) is the most important flaw of older IOS versions.
The IOS music environment seems to get a similiarly low attention by Apple like in classic MacOS, leaving most of that field to third parties like Digidesign.

IOS has a very powerful DSP environment, which beats most VSTs and brings some 'modern' processing not available in classic MacOS (granular and wavetable synthesis).
The most welcome aspect: the 'soundprint' of IOS is very different from the early TDM stuff - they complement each other realky nice.
(btw this doesn't apply to each and every app, but to about 30-40 selected ones)

You will have a hard time to find a more convincing virtual analog than (say) Zeeon or wavetable synths like the PPG apps by Wolfgang Palm.
Driving a TDM Virus by something like TC-Data lifts the oldie into never heard before sound areas.
My personal bottomline: whatever Apple's shitty company policy may be or become - as long as they keep their entry fee at 500 bucks, any IOS system is a bargain for the functionality it provides. Turn off the Siri chatterbox, disconnect it from the net and all it's social rubbish and enjoy.

Back to the original question:
you can only restore old images with old iTunes versions that sign the image offline
iFunBox can transfer single purchases from your own archives between your devices
(very useful, but may not always yield expected results when moving content to a different IOS version)
Otherwise you have to go the jailbreak path, as mentioned above.

i spent some time last night in a final analysis effort with my ipad1
its pretty useless.. i am leaning towards getting rid of it.. i dont even know why i still have this thing!
i guess i didnt get rid of it out of resentment that i feel i didnt get my moneys worth!!! out of the device.
it was only usable for 2 years? or so?

i was hoping to use it for screen sharing?
or midi controller of some sort?
anyone looked into those possibilities? im not aware of which apps to use

it's in fact a rather low powered device, but far from useless
both SamplR and SampleWiz run on it, the M3000 Mellotron, Genome Midi Sequencer (can do step sequenced CC), iElectribe for synth Drums, Drum Jam for acoustic Drums, Multitrack-DAW (which is my all purpose tape style recorder, so simple and convenient) to name a few.
classic SamplR intro clip
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDHQ362yBUc

The only screen sharing app that works really smooth (via lightning cable) is Duet, but it demands much more power than an iPad One can provide.
I've used it as the only (!) screen for a MacMini - after setup with a regular screen the Mini booted with the remote display and kept the virtual connection in memory.
You run the Duet app and see the OSX screen, bring the app to background and IOS is back etc.

But the iPad One is a handy shell terminal.

the app is called AC-7 Core by Saitara Software and features a wireless Midi connection (needs rtpMidi on the PC), but from OSX Tiger upwards no additional software is needed.

a lot of those apps aren't in the iTunes Store anymore, vanished completely.
Ymmv - in some cases you can 'download the last compatible version', but a lot of developers don't offer this option.

To get audio (beyond the internal mic) into the iPad you need the CameraConnection Kit which works with most cheapo standard USB things.
The Alesis ioDock version 1 is a better option if you can find a cheap one - it features a 'no sysex design flaw' but the rest of midi works great, the audio quality is surprisingly nice.

This may apply if you have some ideas what to do with that (very special) iPad, otherwise I'd rather recommand at least a Mini-2 (retina), the Air-2 probably the most solid workhorse.
(my case is slightly different because I bought lots of apps when they were released and had the dock anyway)
Not to forget restricted network capabilities of IOS 5.

Does anyone have any experience using iPad as secondary monitor to extend desktop? I’m curious if this might be possible with Mac OS 9 somehow?? Or early ppc versions of OS X

VLC player v2.1.3 doesn’t work properly but I found another app that works semi decent for video; i need to verify if v2.1.3 was the last version that was cmpatible with ios 5.1.1 as the version that is installed now on my ipad1 doesnt work; it always quits playing after 1 second

the one that works, also works accessing network shared files over wifi lan via "UPNP DLNA"
I think it’s called ‘av player HD’, ill attach a pic:

as mentioned above I have the Duet app (iPad Air-2) and it works great as a MacMini Screen.
On Windoze it's not that funky and some versions were reported to mess the system quite to a degree. Didn't check Win details for my main interest was a mobile screen for the MacMini.
It even does the login thing, which TwoMon cannot handle.
Yet TwoMon seems the best candidate, as it's running on IOS 5 on an iPad-1.
(Duet needs IOS 8, which is out of reach for an iPad-1)

Sidenote because I just experience this in Pro Tools TDM (which is fairly new to me regarding hands-on experience)
The drawing of plugin automation is great, but a lot of work and the one-after-the-other parameter handling is neither a smooth nor an inspiring workflow.
For that purpose (if the plugin supports Midi CC) an iPad based controller surface is much more appealing. Some apps feature X-Y panels or Sequencers that handle multiple CCs, which gives an almost physical feel of control.

TC-Data is probably the most advanced (and one of the conceptually best implementations I had on any system)

ok.. so twoMon is the one! for the ipad1! thanks so much Astroman!

currently 13.99$ on the app store (not cheap as far as apps go?)

theres 2 different TwoMon apps actually
one is TwoMonUSB (usb cable?)
the other is TwoMonAir? (bluetooth or wifi?)

the most remarkable feature is it's support for IOS 5.1, which would add a big value point to such so called outdated tablets, if it (really) performs as demonstrated.
I'd go with the cable based version unless it's for (say) server administration and such tasks.
The price is low midrange in my estimation (less than 10 cheap, 10-30 mid, above 'high').
But considering price versus delivered results most quality apps are in fact cheap.

One of my favorites is the virtual Fairlight CMI (from Peter Vogel, one of original hardware developers). $50 get you the full user experience of the original using a stylus (the most simpel does) plus the original libraries. They even fake the disk operation and noise.  8)
I really like the crude sequencer as a composition tool - it leads to very particular lines just by it's mode of operation - and it's a piece of history.

Another rare classic is iVCS3, an EMS Synthi emulation by Apesoft.
Apesoft and Amazing Noises are synonyms for the same developer team.
Their ApeFilter, Sparkle and Moebius sound processors are indeed... amazing.

There's a Mellotron app for $50-70 with all 'tapes' included - reads high, but the exact same content is about at least $300 from GForce on PC.

Palm's PPG apps are in the $20-30 range and have an outstanding sound quality.
Complex stuff by nature, but that's WT synthesis.

Last but not least an ad hoc sampler/resampler with extensive sound mangling: SamplR.
A true classic since the early days of IOS.
Just this single app for 10 bucks is worth an iPad One and an ioDock One alone.
One of the best regarding simplicity and workflow that I know.

ps: I may add that I don't mind geeky gimmicks - it's all about usability and sound for me... and I'm very(!) picky about the latter. I still have a Creamware DSP system and PT TDM.
