External fw drive not ejecting
« on: December 13, 2017, 12:41:50 PM »
Hello,
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. I recently formatted an external hard drive (Glyph) in FAT32 for use between my G4 with os9.2 and a windows laptop. This all works fine and both machines will see the drive. However when I select the icon on the G4 to remove the drive, "eject" is grayed out. Just turning the drive off crashes the system.
I formatted using an osx 10.6.8 machine with disk utility.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Took me forever to learn Command+e in OS X for ‘eject’.

How about Command+y in OS 9?
Or, simply drag the mounted disk’s icon to the trash?
(Sorry if you’ve already tried these obvious routines.)

is it a firewire drive? or a usb drive?
mac os 9 is not compatible with usb 2.0
therefore most people would want to avoid trying to use USB for
transfering files to or from.. it would be like 5kb/s

is it a firewire drive?

Onthe title says "external Firewire ...", on FAT32.

I would do install something on the WinBox to see the firewire drive once it is formatted on apple partition map schemme and HFS+ format.

Macdrive 8 or 9, for example.

In that way you can run the project on the firewire drive in OS9, instead of using it as a transfer unit only.

Maybe macstuff can teach us how to let the drive on one computer and share the files thru a network.

But only the windows machine would run the files native. Performance on the mac should be sad, and more even if you plug that drive thru USB 1 instead of firewire.
However when I select the icon on the G4 to remove the drive, "eject" is grayed out. Just turning the drive off crashes the system.
I would treat the firewire conection as a IDE drive. I mean, I would shutdown the computer instead of eject any drive with audio sessions.

I have tried to move files in USB 2.0 drives in GUID, APM and MBR partition schemes in HFS+, journaled  from Panther/Tiger/Leopard PowerPC to Tiger/Leo/SL Intel. you have to choose what is best for your case.

AFAIK MacOS9 understand Apple Partition Map and MBR only. GUID is a no go I think.

Mac OS9 can read and write to FAT 32, but no audioapp would run it quick up enough to use it as scratch disk, I guess.
