There could be any number of subcatagories depending on how it is used. I think there should be one board for now, and possibly others once we see how it is used.

exactly - u dont want to have a "whole board"  taking up real estate on the main page if it has less then x number of posts.. and its next to empty... i agree

theres already a number of "boards" that are completely empty and should be deleted/pruned

http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/board,175.0.html
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/board,176.0.html

theres a number of boards on the main page that in my opinion should be moved to a *SUB* board
because of lack of interest / lack of posts / lack of content.. such things dont deserve their *OWN* section on the *MAIN* page...

right now on the main page if i hold option and press down arrow to move down "1 screen at a time" it takes 8 full page lengths to get to the bottom... way too heavy
for a website that is supposed to cater to being able to being viewed on classilla on a g4!
the simplemachines forums work pretty good as far as being accessed from older machines.. but in some cases LESS IS MORE! simplifying the main page simplifies the mental effort needed to discern the location of desired content

Thanks. I don't think we need Sub-Boards.
But let see how many start programming after somebody have time write some "hello midi-device world"-examples  :)

but while im here, i might aswell ask,
how come the threads in the programming board
+ alot of other boards dont get added to the '10 Most Recent Posts" box on the main page??
its very confusing!

That may be true, but it is easy to "collapse"whole sections; When ever I "clean-up" the main page, I get tons of message from people who can't find anything, most new members do not use the search at all and look only at the main level

on the topic of the search;
the topmost search box on the right could use a label to make it clear to NEW users that
that search box only searches the section u are currently viewing.. wheras the "search all topics" box
does exactly that.. i make that mistake quite alot on the site wondering why theres no results when im searching for something i know
exists.. then i realize im using the wrong search..

like simple html text to the left of the search box that could say "Search topics in current board:"
would probably stop alot of people from getting frustrated!

example:
if you are in the "marketplace section"  > http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/board,92.0.html
and you type in topmost right search box to find "lexar firewire" > no results! because it only searches within "marketplace section"

if u are aware its a simple fix to click the "macos9lives" banner to return to the root and THEN use the search box again
and bingo! results. but maybe alot of other people wouldnt catch that

Search Has Been Modified with Pull-down to Include "Entire Forum", "This Board" (if you are not at main page), and any individual board

Suh-WEET!

Guess I’d better be getting my yearly, voluntary $5-15.00 member fee
in before the start of 2018... before any possible increases take effect!

So here is the criteria... (slightly edited)
1) You have found this site useful and you are NOT a starving musician
2) You like to give more than you receive
3) All the children in the house are fed
4) You have NO instruments at the Pawn Shop

i like the select box dropdown... it reminds me of how the internet was back around the time of release of mac os 9.. websites frequently would prefer the simplicity of the dropdown menu to select the content you were interested in... often used on the apple site itself but this was a much larger trend of webdesign at the time

example:
https://web.archive.org/web/19990508211845/http://www.apple.com:80/developer/

the width of the dropdown select right now is a bit extreme however.. forced to that width by the content of the text of the different boards.. is it possible to edit which sections are presented? so the width of the dropdown could be reduced?
right now its jutting off the border of the page

my browser is Chrome on osx Yosemite 10.10.5  and im on a macbookpro 13" screen
