Best aftermarket cooler for MDD graphics card?
« on: June 06, 2017, 11:03:53 AM »
I don't like the stock GeForce4 cooler at all, so I'm looking into replacing it with an aftermarket unit, preferably a passive one to keep noise level down. Searching far and wide for something that fits without hacking up the case, I found one passive cooler that does! Zalman VNF100 seems to do the trick, and some Asian fellow (don't know which country) have even used one of these inside an MDD. You loose one PCI slot though.

Got any third party cooler on your graphics card inside your Mac? Post some info and pics here so we can compile a list of what works and what doesn't.

The Asian fellows blog: http://akamika.blog80.fc2.com

Some pics of the VNF100 inside an MDD:

He seems to have a rare Gigadesigns CPU upgrade inside of it as well.

This setup is… well, puzzling. He seems to be going for absolute maximum performance and noise be damned. The extra Giga fan will more-or-less work where it resides right in front of the original main fan, but the turbulence in that section gets loud indeed. The PCI-slot exhaust fan he has in the "top" slot adds even more noise, plus it works against the main fan by sucking already-hot air up from the CPU area, across the VNF100 and the other PCI cards instead of it going right out of the back exhaust opening. I know this because I tried that exact fan in that position and it actually raised the internal temps.

Maybe he has the MDD in a separate room.

Yes. Feels like a terrible idea to do it like this. I found a VNF100 btw and bought it. Hope it arrives before the weekend so I can silence the MDD even more.
