Best picture viewer for OS9?
« on: December 11, 2016, 01:04:53 PM »
Was looking through 300 some picturea tonight using QuickTime picture viewer and thought that there must be something better available to look through that many pictures.

Would love to find something like iPhoto but for OS9.

Any suggestions?

I use the shareware GraphicConverter a lot - it has a photo browser function.
I like version 3.7.2 best.

Well, the most professional program in this fields is "Cumulus". It is for absolute professional photographers and categorizing thousands of thousend pictures. It is "agency style" and rich of tagging features. More a full library and network tool.

But there are many many other programs in for doing picture previews, some of them quite fast (factor 10 to quicktime). ACDSee 1.6 or iViewMedia Pro are good programs for example. If you like the column view "Coela" can do quite quick previews while browsing the filesystem.

I have a question:  any good solutions for creating thumbnails to replace the generic jpeg etc. icons?  I am so used to Windows and OSX doing that automatically in most cases, I rediscovered what a pain it is to have to sift manually or use a specific program to preview files that are all in one big folder.

Anyone have a program that does this and does it well with a minimum of hassle?  I know you can manually paste a pic into an file's icon, but I would think there would be some kind of batch processing program that could process an entire folder.

Or maybe that is something that some savvy programmer needs to be working on right now?  ;D

here we go, i am actually posting this from OS9.

start it once to do the prefs.

then drag and drop files and folders onto it to process them.

it works for video files, too. (but watch your prefs if you do; you dont want your .mov files to open with photoshop next time.)

both, creating preview icons and previewing files without preview resource can also be done using the "open" command in graphic converter. but it sucks for 1000 files. :)

Posting from OS9?  Very cool!  I've heard the talk about Classzilla and stuff, but I take it this forum is deliberately compatible with that?  Been so long since I used an OS 9 machine with internet, my current specimen has no Airport or direct connection to anything, I have to transfer things over to it.

start it once to do the prefs.

then drag and drop files and folders onto it to process them.

it works for video files, too. (but watch your prefs if you do; you dont want your .mov files to open with photoshop next time.)

Thanks for the app DropIcon, that I don't recall ever coming across before, but it makes sense something like that exists! ;)  I will be trying it out shortly.
I don't have any .mov files on there to screw up at least, and few pics, just that I downloaded a large batch of some of the latest flame fractals to use as desktop backgrounds and when I loaded them on the OS9 Mac in one folder, I forgot how tedious it was to have to click and load each individual file to see what it was.
Photoshop, which I recently loaded, does that in program ( with a few files that won't preview in Photoshop for some reason in the open file window), but I am too accustomed to actually seeing the file icon with thumbnail in place in the folder.  That is something I have been wondering about for a while, regarding thumbnail icons for files.

Thanks and my best to you!

p.s. If anyone hasn't seen flame fractals, do a search.  One of the most recent programs that generate them is using some 3 dimensional depth.  I can't think of the name right now, but I think you can even do animations with them.

There is JWildfire.  The menu item Wallpapers has some examples, but many more abound on other sites, old and new.  Seems they have advanced in the last several years.

Just wanted to tell you about two further great programs for viewing a large amount of pictures:

.) QPict

http://www.qpict.com/download-old-versions.html

QPict is a kind of manager for pictures, displays meta data, and has various features for overviews.

.) PicPops 3.6 Classic

https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/4649/picpops

It is damn fast, and makes it a joy to klick through a mass of pictures.

Does anyone have the registered version/registration code for DropIcon? I really like the program but the 'Demo' watermark is kinda annoying.

it works good overall, but the bb code formatting stuff is missing.

i use windows or sierraa for web sometimes, as not even safari 4 is a proper tool anymore. not to speak of OS9.

Thanks, it doesn't have a serial for version 3.02 though. Do you know anywhere else I could get the serial/another version of DropIcon?
