How to connect OS9 for internet / web use?
« on: October 03, 2016, 01:17:53 AM »

Hi guys n gals

It's been way too long since I had to connect an OS9 machine to put it to work online.

Have 3 G4's.  #1 <an MDD Dual processor> & 2 <an MDD single processor> are both online with Leopard.  No issues there.  No intention of putting OS9 on those two.

#3 <a Quicksilver> intended to run OS9 ONLY, & deal with uploading a simple website is the issue.  The Ethernet is operational on all 3 lines, but no memory of how to get the OS9 machine "connected" to start doing website work, minor browsing, email, etc.

Don't even recall where to start.

Thanks
OldMacDon...

So you're just looking for the software to get started, actually? Why don't you grab the Classilla browser from over at classilla.org first?

After that, you may want to grab a FTP client for uploading your stuff. I always used "Fetch", but I don't have a OS9 machine at hand right now and don't know if that one still works. There are some alternatives though - just try google. As for web work, we used BBedit to edit our PHP/HTML back in the day ...

yeah u might need to clarify a bit further
are u talking about how to wirelessly connect the machine to your network?
or, like the reply above said, are u looking to find out which apps to use?

more info please;)

as i just said to someone else a moment ago, my preferred method of connecting an old g4 to my network now is to buy it its own wireless bridge/access point small device that includes an ethernet LAN port .. and physically connect it to the wireless device with a LAN cable. that way the wireless device can connect with a more up-to-date wireless protocol that isnt supported natively by mac os 9 (such as wireless G or Wireless N) and higher ghz bands.. (5ghz) http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_1056_1058&item_id=098578 heres an example product

the dhcp server on your router should set evrything up automatically after that

Sorry for any ambiguity.

This is a fresh new completed install on a "new" machine.

The quicksilver now has OS9.?? on it... probably 9.22 I think.
Software installation is not an issue as far as I can tell.

Ethernet is definitely confirmed functional on all three cables by a quick switch & validate that the other machine still has operational internet service.

The OS9 machine simply isn't making the connection.

When I tell the browser to go to Google, it claims there is no internet connection.

Long ago, my OS9 connecting experience was with a modem.
Now, it's no longer modem, but ethernet.
Am a bit lost after this software install.

By the way, I do have Classilla.
It can't even find Google yet.

The ISP info seems to be in, but not sure whatever Ethernet settings need to be set up.

Wireless won't be an issue since these are G4 towers that will be staying put where they are.

So... that's the status.

Thanks

If you got an DHCP server active at your DSL-modem, go to "Control Panels" -> "TCP/IP" and activate "Ethernet" and "DHCP" there. Thats it.

Line 1:
of the TCP/IP panel says "Connect via: Ethernet

Line 2:
Configure: Using DHCP Server

Line 3:
DHCP Client ID: No idea what is supposed to be here

Line 4-6 have info in them

Line 7: Name server address: Box is empty

Column 2:
Line 1
Use 802.3: Currently checked.  Have tried both ways.

Select Hosts file:
Clicking the button gives me a menu.
No idea what to even look for.

Implicit Search Path:
Starting domain name:
(Empty box here)

Ending domain name
(Empty box here too)

Additional search domains:
(Empty box here too)

Options: Clicking on it produces...

Make TCP/IP (Radio button "Active" is selected)

Load only when needed is not checked.

So... what next coach?

Who is your service provider? Are u connecting with Wired connection?
id say contact your service provider to provide u with your dhcp gateway and/or DNS(Name Server Address) info

if u listened to my advice and got a wireless bridge it would do all those settings for you automatically

hosts file is optional - you can ignore that setting

You've got a bunch of empty boxes because you have the TCP/P panel in "advanced" or "administrator" mode.
(Selected in the Edit menu when the panel is up) Those are all for directing the machine through a LAN / subnet when a bunch of computers are sharing the same gateway. Not needed otherwise.

All you need are:

1) Connect via Ethernet
2) Using DHCP server
3) Blank
4) An IP address for the machine assigned by your router such as: 10.0.1. >a digit assigned to the machine<
5) A subnet mask ID like 255.255.255.0
6) The main address of your router such as: 10.0.1.1
(the above addresses are from MY computer - your may obviously be different)

Nothing else needs to be there BUT…

The 802.3 BOX should be unchecked.
(802.3 is the original, long obsolete internet protocol - very basic, very slow)

Uncheck the 802.3 box and reboot.
Is there an address at #4?
Does the computer show up in the "shared" section of folder windows on the other machines?

>> If yes, you have at least basic communication with your router and you have some sort of a protocol issue.
>> If no, you may have an ethernet hardware problem in the machine. Is the computer ethernet proven to work either elsewhere or in OSX or…?

Holler back…

>All you need are:

<Items 1-6>

These all look right.
The 802.3 box is now unchecked.
Did a restart as advised.

>4) An IP address for the machine assigned by your router such as: 10.0.1. >a digit assigned to the machine<

To be clear...

Address at #4: YES there is one.
169.xxx.xxx.xx

Note that the other machines on the local network are both OSX machines.
Should they see one another?

>Does the computer show up in the "shared" section of folder windows on the other machines?

So far, it doesn't seem to finish activating file sharing in order to even identify if it will show up.

... and yes it does show a Name server address too.

... and I take it this points at a hardware issue?

Since I can prove to myself that the ethernet cable is active...

Nothing left excepting a bad ethernet port if I understand this right?

*************
And to geforce...

ISP Comcast
Yes wired connection

Well... Hmmm.... Isn't the "Name server address" an indicator of the port GETTING the right info ... indicating that the ethernet port is actually working?

(Sorry, I don't recall for sure what the "Name server address" does / is.)

Where would I even enter whatever info... their login info?

Thanks for the help guys!

Yeah...this is starting to smell like a hardware problem. As the Devil says, the "169" address looks self-assigned.

What does the panel show as the router address? Does it match the router address shown on the OSX machines? If it's not there, or it's "169" or different from the others, it's a new game where you:

1. Carefully examine the ethernet jack for bent pins...bent? then straighten...not bent?  then

2. Examine the ethernet jack solder connections with a magnifying glass - yes you have to pull the motherboard to do this. You're looking for evidence that somebody tripped over the ethernet cable and cracked a solder joint when the cable was ripped out.

Beyond that, you may be SOL with this machine. Where do you live? Any competent Mac help, clubs etc near you?
