Powermac MDD 867 apple superdrive replacement
« on: November 24, 2015, 01:24:55 PM »
My apple superdrive in the MDD 867 died a while back.  Do I need to replace it with another Apple branded superdrive or can I install a cd/dvd drive from another manufacturer?  I need a drive that will allow me to  boot to dvd or cd rom.

Most of those are made by Pioneer. Look for DVR-112 and up

most drives should be able to boot, at least i have not yet heard about exceptions.

more problematic is that there are many where you can not remove the lid, so it wont fit into a G4 slot.

if you only need to boot into OS9, firewire might be a good alternative.

thanks for the replies.  I got a used Creative Labs cd/dvd, took off the front cover of the unit and installed it in the powermac.  It runs fine and boots from cd.
