Recommendation for internal optical drive for QS?
« on: September 01, 2015, 12:01:16 PM »
So my 'new' QS came to me with a optical drive problem. The drive is the original Pioneer 'super drive' DVR-103. the drive won't open up. The most action I can get from it is when trying to eject from toast... It will do the initial 'jump to attention' but that's it.

If I spin the gears manually the door will open... Also belt is intact.

Anyway what would be the recommended replacement drive?

Thanks...MH

i recommend a drive that can handle - and + discs because i run into that issue more than once before and had to burn a installer disc that can be read with older drives. since that i kept a stack of dvd drives from old windows machines to have a spare in case.

I have used LG DVD-RW drives in all my machines without any issues so far. I keep myself away from Asus and Samsung because they haven't been that great. At least not the few dozen or so that i've replaced over the years...

Plextor make the absolute best optical drives that money can buy, they are built like a tanks and have a very low failure rate.

Pioneer, Teac, and Sony make excellent burners also.

Most of our retail sales over the past 4 years are LG and they hold up extremely well for the price;

Mactron has also pointed out that the LG have great legacy compatibility :)

I am definitely not a fan or Acer, Samsung/Toshiba :(
