Macintosh SE /w upgraded "SuperDrive"
« on: August 27, 2015, 07:21:00 PM »
looking at one of these units for sale
first came out in early 1987
but this one says it has an upgraded super drive
http://www.ccadams.org/se/super.html

im trying to see if this means it can use normal 1.44mb 2HD floppies instead of the 800K DSDD flopies

obviously theres no 10 base T on this thing.
can it get internet access by attaching it via LOCALTALK to another internet capable mac via SERIAL?

Wow '87?... I thought the SE was later... must be thinking of the SE30. Never had a 'Super Drive' back then, only the 880K. You'll be 'Stylin' with a 'fancy pants' Super Drive!!! ;D

im waiting to hear back from the guy but he only asking for 100$ for it.. so if it can read 1.44mb floppies i will drive 2 hrs to go pick it up

that model first came out in early 87 but i think the specific one he has is from around 90 if it came with the superdrive ...

You shouldn't buy this SE. IMHO
For 100 bucks you should have better options, like PM8600 or PM9600.
Even LC III or Performa 475 are better options, and sometimes you can find them for free.

i have plenty of power pc g3/g4..
but no 68k macs!
also these older macs can be compatible with specific older 80s samplers via scsi (such as the e-mu Emax, and E-mu Emulator samplers)

and i would only be using it for midi + scsi + really old early 90s apps

The LC III and Performa 475 are 68k Macs. Quadras are even better, but hard to find.
... but an SE is excessively limited.

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_classic/specs/mac_se_fdhd.html

its got a 40mb scsi hd (that i could use for my akai s950)
and keyboard + mouse are ADB (i could use for my B+W G3)
and its got a floppy (ive needed a floppy drive!)
and its got built in serial (For midi)
and its got built in scsi (For samplers)
and it lets me run ancient versions of mac os that ive never seen or been able to see
probably since i was in grade school!!

are u suggesting that - if i were to get a 68k mac - that it should be from the last final series of 68k cpus?

Yes but it's SOOOO cute!! Haha!

When my daughter was a toddler I used to break it out and type a whole bunch of phrases into 'MacTalker'... To this day she remembers it fondly as "the little computer that used to talk to her"!! Haha!

Yes. You should try to find the Performa 475, Quadra 605, Quadra 650 and Quadra 840av.
and forget about SE.

A good point in this computer is the IDE interface because it is easiest to upgrade now a days ... The bad point is that It use "slow" RAM for video instead of faster VRAM ...

exactly what i thought!
especially to use it with IDE-CF adapter (y)

plus it uses the last + most powerful (i think?) 68K cpu

its interesting to look at list of macs that supported IDE hard drives:

No, the powerful 68k CPU was the 40 Mhz 68040 inside 840 AV, and some accelerator cards uses the faster 68040@50Mhz. Furthermore, the LC variant 68LC040 has not FPU.
... and without take into account the 68060.

Yes it is. Most of the systems 63x that you listed and this LC580, uses the same motherboard. It was made to be cheap...
If you buy some of those, you should consider to buy an Ethernet PDS card too.
