Recent CD/DVD drives
« on: February 04, 2013, 06:26:41 AM »
Does anybody have a recent SATA CD/DVD-RAM (!) drive that is bootable with Mac OS 9 and RAM (not only ROM), and working well?

I would not like to search for an old IDE one, but take a recent and new drive. But I also do not like to search for a working one with tryal and error ;)

So any suggestions? I would expect the Samsung ones, but I am not 100% sure,

in order to boot from a sata cd/dvd you would need to have a bootable sata pci adapter installed inside the mac
this obviously limits this to pci capable macs

cards that could be used include models by

firmtek / seritek
sonnet
ratoc
acard

as well as modified/flashed silicon image pci sata adapters that have been given the Seritek firmware.

otherwise you would require an ATA-SATA bridge of some sort enabling you to physically connect the ATA ribbon to the adapter, and then to the sata interface on the dvd drive. in theory this should provide the exact same functionality as the ide based drive, i would bet money that it would function 100% as long as all pins of the ribbons/adapters are connected properly
