using a radeon 9800 pro on mac os 9

thanks to diehard i have a second 9800 pro .. as u know it works in sawtooth machine
without taping pins.. im not sure if its a pc flashed card or an original mac card.. it doesnt say anything about being mac edition on the sticker but it works

so my neighbour was about to recycle a g4 400mhz sawtooth.. i just grabbed it to test a bunch of hardware without rippijng apart my other ssystems.

i was hoping it might have a dvd-ram drive but nope..


im just doing a restore of mac os 9 with the original sawtooth restore disk now.
but the radeon boots fine with no hard drive installed off the stock restore disk
and i will see how it functions compared to the 9200 LE PCI on this g4 400mhz

maybe i can do a benchmark

well i just installed and i can say its quite speedy... and working 100% in mac os 9..

the extensions for ati are all installed + enabled.. so it must be working with the ati extensions

i can count 6 ati extensions installed + switched on
ati 3d accellerator
ati driver update
ati graphics accelerator
ati mpp manager
ati rage 128 3d accelerator
ati resource manager

i can also notice that there is not one nvidia extension present at all..
because this model never shipped with one?? and its the exact disk for the machine that it shipped with (ssw version 9.0.2 691-2500-a)

airport card is installed + workng aswell;)
so this leads me to ask.. Mactron?? why did u think the radeon 9800 pro would not work with mac os 9? it works!!!!!!!! and its fast as hell

im also able to change resolutions to all supported resolutions!!!!!!!
up to 1600x1024 60hz (im using a 3:4 aspect ratio 1280 x 1024  monitor atm..)

i think there is a chance its not using 2d acclleration specifically but the performance of this card is so much greater that it really doesnt make a difference.. im scrolling pages in ie5 and its very fast

ok when dragging hte ie5 window to a new location i do see the "roll up" non accelleration type refresh so yes it is defintaely not using accelleration

there is no official 3d support with this card but it is known to work. and no you wont be able to enable 3d acceleration in os9.

it works but dragging windows to new locations results in a .5 second roll up refresh of the window...... so i guess mactron was right this is not desirable by most users standards.

i just swapped out the card for a pci radeon 9200 and its doing the same refresh...
i must need to install driver update for 9200 support

wait a second. is that the xt card ? i just checked that card is a no go under os9 because it was used for anything above a g4.

im using it right now in os9 with the radeon 9800 pro "mac edition" and its working fantastic.
this is with *EVERY ATI EXTENSION DISABLED* so the card is 100% compatible with os9...
working 100%.. but 100% incompatible with the previous ati extensions.. i have to say that even without the extensions its fast. it doesnt need the "Accellerator" becuase the card is so insanely faster then the other cards that mac os 9 supports "accelleration" for.

point me at the 1k bloom window test and i will run it

again this is not the XT model, this is the radeon 9800 PRO "mac edition" and it is working inside my single processor MDD 1.25ghz (2003)

RADEON 9800 PRO Mac Special Edition has 256MB 680MHz DDR (double the memory of RADEON 9800 PRO Mac Edition which is on the photo). The GPU clock speed is 380MHz. The card has ADC and DVI connectors.

as far as i know the flashed pc equivelents of this card do not work in quicksilvers + mdd without having pins taped or traces cut.. this card was obviously made special to be compatible with the quicksilvers + mdds as it has been tested by both diehard + myself on both types of systems.

if u enable the extensions.. it will crash or behave slowly.. if the extensions are off completely. then the card works GREAT!!!!

only when i load classilla is there a roll up effect when moving windows
but its so fast its not an issue really.. perhaps a ti4600 is better with its proper accelleration. i will find out when i get my ti4600.
oh and there also is a finder crash when u first boot up.. that u have to force quit
but then everything works fine.

ive just compared this once more to the 8500 radeon and it no comparison -- the 8500 is much better as its properly supported... so the radeon 9800 pro is basically only usefull for mac os x.
its really too bad that they couldnt have extended support for these cards.. given they were released in 2004 and mac os 9 was still very much being used at that point... cheap companies..

the 8500 is my best performing card in mac os 9 for sure 100%.
like i said recently on another thread its got the same power as a ti 4400.. i still have yet to see what a ti4600 is like.. but the 8500 has to be the best radeon card..
despite the numbers being lower then a 9000 or 9200... remember that it is better then both of those cards.. and it has its own "8500 acellerator" extension aswell. making it the most supported + highest performing radeon card for mac os 9
