'Thumb' Drives in OS9?

So can you format those USB 'thumb' drives/ 'flash' drives (or whatever you want to call them) to work in OS9?

I use them in FAT and exchange files with Win machines. But only in very small docs worth to use it. OS9 (probably OS8 too) can handle the files in FAT, but it worth booting OSX (at least 10.3.x) to transfer bigger files and get faster transfers via USB 2.0.

It seems that you are in Protools as deep as me. I would use it only for transferring the .PT5 or .PTS of a project. Not the audiofiles.

I have never formatted a flash drive to HFS/HFS+ . It should work better in that way, but you will have to install MacDrive on Win to use it (?).

A firewire transfer or network transfer is quicker than USB 1.1. If using a USB thumbdrive is going to define a workflow, I would think it more than twice.

MacTron has showed us a Firewire to SD unit. It was way faster than USB 1.1

DieHard has showed us some USB2, Firewire 800 RAID options. Also some server options x86 based.

ChrisNova777 is an FreeNAS Evangelist. He also showed us some external solutions using eSATA.

Knezzen uses XServe solutions.

I have a USB 2.0 (NEC chipset) PCI card and boot Panther-Tiger-Leopard to transfer projects. Seems the cheaper way to use USB 'thumb' drives/ 'flash' drives for OS9.

best solution is to use a AFP network file server... that way u can copy files with ease from anywhere on your network by
using the network file server as a go between..

process is so fast + easy..
1. mount file server on file source computer + drag files over
2. mount file server on mac computer + drag files over

transfers are practically instant if the files are under 500mb
and does like 4gb full dvds in just about 60 seconds maybe less

no usb drive required..
i had made some posts looking for a firewire thumbdrive
but they are like unicorns .. good luck finding one

the reason i prefer the AFP is also becasue u dont have to use some clunky FTP program
to transfer files.. once u mount the fileserver on the mac it appears in finder exactly the same as your
os9 macs hard drive..

i would like to get a firewire compact flash or SD mount box made someday!!
this is particularly cool u can find more info about how to make this yourself frm parts on ebay

not only that but if used with another compact flash IDE adapter..  could be very convenient indeed (as a personal standard alternative to jump drives)

especially this kind with the pci bracket socket for inserting + ejecting the compact flash
but obviously u would need a reboot as IDE is not hotswappable

im looking for one of these that has the 4 pin molex standard power connection rather then this floppy 1.44mb power connection
i may have to get some of these 4pin molex to floppy power adapters  i think some of them will come with this bundled if u buy on ebay
but u have to make sure in the description that it comes with it

this little sd card has wifi built into it.. which means u could wirelessly access its content??
while its still plugged into this compact flash adapter..
pretend for a second it was living inside a lexar compact flash firewire reader..
plugged into your mac...  i think u culd access the contents of the drive from an iphone?

sd is cheapest..
with a sd to compact flash adapter u have the best of both worlds..
u can use the older compact flash firewire + the newer cheaper media
win win

but would have to make sure that the lexar drive supports type 2 CF
which the sd-cf adapter's form factor is
