cool article here on using the redrum in reason

small tip from me,
if u click this small "Red light" above each button it toggles it on

this activates the "Flam" setting which changes its articulation.. partiticularly useful when programming percussion parts
you can hear this most if the flam dial is all the way applied (100%)
and the button next to the flam setting, this just makes it automatically apply flam to every step that u press,
regardless of this button to the right of the flam dial's settings, clicking the red light above the step will enable the flam for that particular step!

also on pc.. pressing ALT when the setting it set to normal velocity will make the note light velocity
and pressing SHIFT will make it a hard velocity
im sure there is equivelent keys on mac... using cmd + shift perhaps?

another good trick .. im not sure if it works in reason 1.0.. but..
if u open up the key lane for the redrum..
set your L + R markers and put it on loop overdub record

then turn your attention to the green drum sample titles to the left of the arrange window
rolling over them shows a speaker with a + symbol
and clicking will obviously play the sound..
but what some people dont know is... if u have record enabled u can use the mouse to "tap" in notes
the way u would tap in notes rhythmically with an mpc..
not sure if it will adhere to the quantize while recording settings...

it can be helpful to do it this way instead of using keys on a midi controller in some instances
especially for adding variations on top of the core rhythm framework! (that would be playing the pattern)

this tip might be a bit basic..
but may elude some people.

when working on a beat pattern in redrum
to add different patterns is really easy
with the redrum clicked/selected
simply select one of the pattern slots (1 through 8 for whatever current letter bank, 8 x 4 = 32 patterns)
write in your pattern rhythm
and then u can press cmd-c and it will copy this pattern
which u can copy to another pattern slot by pressing cmd-v to paste the pattern

then once your patterns are set up..
theres two other ways u can do things
u can draw in your pattern changes with the pencil tool but this is kind of a pain in  the ass
its much easier to just press record and press the pattern change as the track is playing and it will automatically
record the pattern changes.. ('snapped' to the length of the pattern)

another way to do this is to map the pattern changes to buttons/pads/keys either on a midi controller or the keyboard itself
u can press the bar changes as the tracks playing and it will record the pattern changes
but of course u can just click the little button on the redrum with the mouse which is just as easy..
but u have to do this as the track is playing in record mode

using the piano keys can be confusing.. and problematic because this maps globally and u will later be on a different track and trigger a pattern change when u had meant to play some keys..
