hey guys...

so i have this idea to create an dead-easy to understand visual chart for easy reference of which apps are able to be run under mac os 8.6.. and which apps absolutely require a version of 9.x and will not run under mac os 8.6..

i also was wondering if people would know which apps that can be hacked or worked around to run under mac os 8.6 by installing carbon + changing files or using ResEdit etc..

im wondering how many lowend mac os 8.6 users we have here... ??
is this something u would find valuable? to have as a reference?

off the top of my head;

last versions to support mac os 8.6 (actual requirement): (updates higher then these versions require mac os 9.0 / 9.1 or 9.2.2)
Ableton Live 1.0 (req 8.6)
Reason 1.0 (req 8.6)
Logic Audio Platinum 4.8.1 (4.0 req 7.6.1+, and 5.0+ req 9.1+!!)
Cubase VST/32 5.0 (req 8.5+)
pro tools 5.01 FREE**
pro tools 5.01 LE**
digital performer 3.0 (req 8.5.1)
Opcode Studio Vision Pro 4.5.1 (req 7.6.1+)

** found this note saying that mac os 8.6 is only supported for ptfree on pci graphics macs (B&W g3, yikes g4 or before)
if u have an agp graphics card it requires 9.0+!! http://archive.digidesign.com/compato/os9/sw/macos501.html
and this applies to all versions of 5.0x - TDM, LE + FREE!

Nuendo was apparently never available for mac os 8.6 and only became available late for mac os 9 in 2001 according to this article
Quote
While Nuendo was originally released as a Windows-only product, the application itself is based on a portable framework, with Steinberg even announcing a BeOS version at one stage, and a Mac OS 9 version finally became available when Nuendo 1.5 was released in 2001.

mac os 8.6 & AFP authentication

just a quick note.. i was using my B&W G3 with os8.6.. and i tried to connect to my AFP fileshare server.. and it would not connect!
i fixed this by copying the apple share extension v3.8.5 from mac os 9.0 to my mac os 8.6 extensions folder, overwriting the old v3.8.3 extension
and now it works!!

also, my B&W g3 is super fast now that its hard drives are being run by the ACARD AEC-6885M ATA-133 card!!! 4 internal drive ports connected to a 66mhz 64bit pci card.. mega bandwidth;)
im not even using the drives in raid.. i cant wait to try that out soon.. i plan on trying to do a stripe with two compact flash cards ;) or maybe even two SD cards! lol

And, in your mind, you are running 8.6 or 9?  ;D

Are you using the B&W G3 graphic port for the Acard? Can you try a 1kWindows test?

quick note about the 6885M Acard 64bit pci..
this card requires Mac os 9... it will give u nothing but problems if u try to use it on a b&W g3 running 8.6
the 6880M 32 bit pci card is 100% os 8.5/8.6 compatible however
