after looking into the possibility of an internal IDE LS-120 drive
http://web.archive.org/web/20000229083753/http://www.superdisk.com/sc/sc_dl.html

this page says the internal IDE version of the drive only ever had windows drivers
and the mac os drivers were onlyh for the USB version of the imation super drive

*insert sad mac face*

MacOpener Discontinuation Notice
MacOpener has been discontinued from the DataViz product line as of March 11, 2007. Because of our current business direction, we were not able to update MacOpener in a timely manner to support many of the new USB, FireWire and other drive types - as well as Windows Vista. Therefore, we have made MacDrive from Mediafour available to our customers. MacDrive is a best-of-breed Macintosh disk mounting solution for Windows that supports the latest Windows operating systems, including Vista, as well as the latest Macintosh hard drives, CDs, DVDs, flash drives and more.
ok so macopener is abandonware! and they suggest using http://www.mediafour.com/software/macdrive/ but i wonder if that one is macos9 compatible
