I also want to thank you, DieHard personally, for posting this thread that got me out of my caveman hideout, took me down memory lane, reflecting on my past, what lead me to ending up here and made me share.

Thank you for the kind words :)

All us cavemen enjoy having our macs in the cave; doing our little caveman tasks for nobody but ourselves, yet we have this awesome community to share ideas and coffee-clutch to those with like minds
And sometimes, the sounds made by banging on rocks or the little squiggles on our stone tablets get seen by the broader world. That's always fun.

Ahoi.
I'm into old 68k macs since forever. Got a bunch of G3/G4 stuff for 90€ recently:

  • Power Mac G4 667MHz, 512MB Ram, 2x 60GB IDE disks, Nvidia MX2 32MB, another PCI graphics card, two SCSI cards
  • Power Mac G4 750MHz Quicksilver, 1,25GB Ram, 1x 40GB IDE disk, ATI Radeon 8600 64MB
  • iBook G3 500MHz
  • Powerbook something, something, no power supply

The Power Mac where used in a professional setting, but the iBook had a dual boot MacOS9/MacOSX. Strange thing is, the disk was called OS9lives. There was a readme file ... which led me to this place. One of you guys owned that iBook!

Those iBook G3s are lovely little laptops, I think you'll be happy with it! If you repack the battery with 3350mAh cells, you should be able to bump your battery life up to 11-ish hours according to my math. Perfect for going out and doing some distraction free writing or light browsing with Classilla around Web 1.1!
Depending on which PowerBook it is, you could probably get by using it as a general purpose laptop if you're into Linux... though even OS X Leopard is still more than usable -- I'm putting it to work right now on my iBook G4.
Hopefully you enjoy your journey into a New World!

No doubt, but this one has a problem, seems the background light only works if the display is opened a certain way. I can see the displays content when i shine a light on it, or wiggle the display, but would prefer it just working. I suspect there is either a cold solder point at the inverter or maybe the cable itself is broken.

I was thinking NetBSD and KDE maybe, if i can properly dual boot to OS9 for games.

Have been reading the forums for a while and blame them for igniting the nostalgia for Mac OS 9.

First computer was a ZX81, in 1982
My first apple was IIgs Woz edition I bought new in 1986, and after that I owned many Mac's, from SE, IIx and up.

During college I working in a computer store and sold Macs and Motorola Starmax clones. And then in my earlier career worked as a Mac system admin, dabling with everything from Transplanting Beige Mac towers into Marathon rackmount cases, to having several racks full of xserve & xserve raid arrays. Some also memorable times like renting collocation space at an ISP, which was ment for a single rackmount PC. But I managed to fit a network switch, Battery UPS & power bar, and x8 Mac mini's inside. We were running web servers (and dual DNS servers & Mail servers, plus ftp and databases). OS9 then later on OSX Server with applications such as Eudora EIMS, DNS Enabler, Rumpus, Filemaker etc.

In my formerly dusty closet collection I have 2 Mac Mini G4's (late model 1.5GHz 64mb vram version), MDD 1.25 (2003 version, single cpu with Radeon 9000 Pro). And a Power Computing Powercenter Pro 210.

I recently collected a pile of goodies Including:
Newer Tech G3-400 Card
ATI 7000, 9250 Mac Cards
Sonnet Tempo Sata 2-Port PCI
Sonnet Tango USB/Firewire
SCSI2SD kit

Took apart one of my Mini's and overclocked to 1.8Ghz.  I don't trust the old heatsink so I am waiting on a small copper heatsink, that should fit and can accommodate a 40mm Noctua fan.

While waiting on that, tinkering on the Mac clone right now..  it is getting a full rebuild. Just thinking about buying a bottle 40 Volume Developer for removing the yellowing on the faceplace (aka Retrobrite).

Cheers : )

Hello everyone, I am Circuit Bored.

I am based in the UK and have been fiddling with old Macs for as long as I can remember, having started collecting computers "for real" around 2010. Recently I have started developing upgrades for some of them, the first of which is called "CircuitTalk" - a clone of the StealthSerial and gPort cards from the early 2000s. In short: it adds serial to New World Macs that do not have it as standard. The first card is focused on the AGP PowerMac G4s and the iMac G4 but I will be expanding the project out to the iMac G3, Blue and White G3 and PCI G4 in the next six months or so. In the long term this card will also make its way to the eMac and the Mac Mini, the latter posing a real challenge. At the moment I am slowly but surely figuring out the pinout of the G3's internal modem/debug connector.

My computer fleet currently has about forty machines in it, the highlights being a Macintosh SE/30 with an '040 upgrade, a Performa 475, a black Performa 5400 with a G3 upgrade, a near-mint SuperMac S900 (currently out of action), and a PowerMac G5 Quad with a fairly unique liquid cooling configuration. I have more G4 dektops than you can shake a stick at and a fair few PowerBooks too.

I occasionally make YouTube videos about old computers. Here's a link to my channel: youtube.com/CircuitBored I don't upload very often because video creation does not come naturally to me but I am proud of my recent videos. It's just a bit of fun really!

I've been lurking on this site for the better part of a decade, mostly just keeping an eye on the cool hacks and developments here. I currently have around a dozen machines that run OS 9 so I should probably take advantage of the pool of knowledge here!

All the best,
CB

Hello everyone,
This is Jose. First post here. Nice to e-meet you all!
I'm originally from Spain but I live in western Canada now.

My story... well, my first computer was a ZX Spectrum +2, from there jumped into PC world for years; until I had enough money to buy my first MacBook, a black one with MacOS X. Since then I've been using a Mac as a daily driver. Fair advice, I'm a Linux guy as well ;)

Recently, I became more and more interested in getting "vintage" computers and consoles, maybe because I'm "vintage" myself as well :o
I have restored a C64, an Amiga 1200... I have three variants of ZX Spectrums, many consoles...
In any case, the Apple PPC platform it something that has always caught my eye. I was at the Uni when iBooks, Powerbooks and PowerMacs where the kinda cool with those PowerPC CPUs, so easy to use, with so many cutting edge technology... and great looks as well!  8)

A couple of months ago I was lucky enough to get a PowerMac G5 that I've now with MacOSX, MorphOS (AmigaOS derivative) and of course, Linux (Gentoo in this case).

Also, and that's why I'm in this forum, so don't kick my ass out yet... I have an iBook G3 "clamshell". I've been working on it, now it has a 128GB MSATA to IDE drive and a fresh MacOS 9.2.2 installation. I have also purchased a 512MB RAM expansion (from OWC), but that's not being recognized. Anyway, I'll open a different post about it.

Great to be here, I'll see you around!

Guess I'll do a short topical intro here :)

I started using Macs in 1998, using a Mac Plus and a digital scanner to write interactive HyperCard games.  I liked the idea of being able to write a recursive stack with supporting xfcns and xcmds to make it a truly (B&W) multimedia experience that wrote itself!

Then in 1990 I got my hands on a Korg WaveStation A/D, and starting with DMCS and then later expanding into other DAW tools, started to migrate my engraving into digital form to make my music come to life, even when I didn't have an orchestra or band handy :)

1990 also saw me get on the Internet via ZTerm, so I had a new place, via usenet newsgroups, to share my music.

I stayed in the 68k realm right up until 1999 when I jumped from Mac OS 7.6.1 to Mac OS 8.6 on a DV SE, right when I got my first digital handicam.  So then I was able to expand my multimedia experience by bringing some of the DSP on-board and doing a bunch of things in software that I used to depend on hardware for.

So while some in the community may know me for being involved in emulation from way back in the early 90s, music and graphics have always been what drew me to the Mac, and what kept me on 7.6.1 and 9.2.2 well after alternative OSes and hardware existed -- because some of the stuff people designed back then still doesn't have a modern equivalent (kind of like with violins).

-afro-  Hello,  Disco Stu 23 Here.

I just typed a lengthy, thoughtful post, but it vanished  ???

But wanted to say "Hi" anyway.  Some Macs I have; Bondi Blue G3 Tower, Egg-shaped iMacs, Sawtooth G4, MDD, then a couple that won't boot into OS 9.

Hi, new member Sea Mac here ....

I've been using Mac's for decades now (3 or 4 ... I've lost track) and think they Peaked when they made my old workstation ... MD771LL/A with Dual Xeon X5675 CPUs clocked at 3.06 Ghz

I wouldn't even Accept NEW Apple hardware As a GIFT because of the crippling of the OS so you can't boot or RUN anything Apple doesn't like (Like a Linux Distro - or any APP they choose to ban) ... and the extreme planned obsolescence of the hardware. I think Apple hasn't made a GOOD System since 2012. The Round Trash Can Shaped Mac Pro introduced in 2013 Can't be expanded or upgraded in ANY way ... It is still good AS A Trash Can - but not much else.

I'll never buy new Crapple hardware ever ... and I can't upgrade this Tower past High Sierra. But I still use Mac OS 9 every day and enjoy my old Games in it all of the time.

There is a PPC Apple Tower Emulator called "SheepShaver" which runs under 64 bit Windows (7 - 10) or under Mac OS X 10.9 through  Mac OS 11.2 ... with Intel OR ARM Hardware.

Here's a Backup I uploaded of my Personal "Turnkey Classic" System setup: https://archive.org/details/sheepshaver_202201 if you want to run Mac OS 9 on your INTEL Or ARM Mac (Or your Windows System) with minimum fuss in setting it up.

(SheepShaver is running Mac OS 9.0.4 on an EMULATED PowerMac 9500 Series [New World ROM] with an 8 GB Hard Drive / 512 MB RAM / using a G4 PPC Processor running at 100 Mhz ... It THINKS! On a 12 core Workstation like Mine: this runs a bit faster than the 9500 PowerMac ever did ... on your system you can get this to run quite nicely!)

I still need to dig out my old G4 Towers if I want to use Software that relies upon the FPU Chip ... The Emulation ISN'T Perfect. (I failed to get "Speakable Items" to "Tell Me a Joke" - the MacinTalk software Can't "Listen and respond" in SheepShaver. But that is the Only thing I couldn't get to run with this great FREE Emulator.)

I have kept every computer back to the Timex 1000 ... so I have a nice collection of old Tower G4 I haven't booted up in years. But I love the older hardware and OSes Apple made before 2013 ... think that they aren't worth the Powder it would take to blow them to ... well - they lost their way and got all about profits and the experience went to hell over the years since then.

Even though I have the hardware to run OS 9 "For Real" I still prefer to run all of my beloved and badly missed OS 9 games and software In A Full Screen Classic Environment running within Mac OS X ... I already have this computer running: so why boot up a second one just to play old games?

But the minute I found this forum I joined it. And I abhor "Social Media" as much as I do Crapple's CURRENT hardware Offerings. Won't EVER Join "Facebook" or "Twitter" ... and wouldn't have the latest Apple System either ... I don't "Join" things IN General! But I WILL Join if my whole heart is in it ... every couple of years I find someplace I feel compatible with, and think I can be a useful contributor to.

You have VALUE that attracted me - I think those "Other" Social Media are worse than useless.

So, here I make another nest. I won't land just anywhere ... I'm very picky. But I feel at home, here.

Oh, and I'm autistic ... see things completely different from regular folks.
I also have a SMF 2.0.19 Forum ... and a nice Hosting Plan ... and I own 4 Domains.

And I'm a kindly old man ... who wishes he was Santa Claus. And I tried to do something with it ... not just wish I was.
So I did this:
Software Santa .
It's a decent TRY ... 15 years of digging for Open Source software has a BIG heap of free stuff piled up. Hope you find something you LIKE!

Yep! The Crazies are Inside your Barn, NOW!!! Let's Celebrate: Your Tex Avery Sample Playlist

A lot of People would be surprised ... that a LOT of the Open Source Software is actually Superior to the equivalent Closed Source "Proprietary" software!

The VLC Player https://www.videolan.org/ is a "Universal" media player that could easily replace a dozen "Stand Alone" type media players. It does EVERY stream / File / Media Type / Disk I've ever encountered and Dozens of Codecs I've never even seen. If you have VLC Media Player installed in your Applications folder, and you Clicked on one of my .m3u Playlist links ... It should just start streaming the Videos IN the Playlist ... RIGHT AWAY. (VLC is set as the default player for .m3u and .m3u8 playlists in your browser's file associations.)

The Playlist Linked to at the End of my introduction post, for instance, Starts playing 66 Tex Avery MGM cartoons in a row and runs for EIGHT Hours nonstop! And this shorter sub-playlist: https://archive.org/download/blitz-wolf-2021-restoration/Your%20Screwy%20Squirrel%20Playlist.m3u Only shows the 5 Tex Avery cartoons featuring "Screwy Squirrel" and skips the other 61 cartoons.

LibreOffice 7 https://www.libreoffice.org/ is MUCH Nicer than Microsoft Office PRO ... it has all of those functions (Except "Outlook" *) ... besides being totally FREE!

Think of it like Super Mario Karts, but FREE, and with tons of free downloadable Tracks/Battle Arenas/and Karts Available. Play against others ONLINE!!! Multiple Race Modes (Including "Easter Eggs").
Oh, you are not finishing this game anytime soon!!!
I know I'll never get done playing this ... I'll die before I get bored with it. The Bots that come with the game can kick my A$$ so I always play on Novice mode ... sometimes I win. My Favorite Kart - right now - is "Dashie (Cyber Bunny)"

I do not have time, here, to share even a fraction of the fun stuff I've dug up ... it has taken me 15 years of searching to get a list of 5000 free things ... and too many of them are worthy of your time. I'll throw out treasure at random intervals as the mood strikes me.

Ohhh, I almost forgot... Santa gave us the "Tab icon" that now displays in your browser for macos9lives.com, hope you guys noticed it  ;)
I have over 1,000 tabs open - distributed across 6 windows ... If I'm in the correct Window: I can now pick out which Tab (or TABS) has MacOS9Lives in it ... looks like 3 or 4 of them are open already!
And if you "Bookmark", or "Add to Favorites", this site, now ... the entry in your List of Favorites/Bookmarks also has this Distinctive Icon next to it!

From my (Autistic) point of view the "9 Lives" Tab Icon is ESSENTIAL to pick you ... out of a sea of open tabs ... and if your browser honors Icon sizes Larger than 16 by 16 ... there are sizes up to 256 X 256 to display ... which would be really pretty.

(It's my home, too ... now: so I'll try to make it NICER, If I Can. This tiny little improvement helps everybody out in some small way ... & Helps ME out in a BIG way ... 'Cause I'm not so organized.)

Ok, that's just crazy, you probably couldn't have found something that rare if if searched night and day, and if found would be $200 or more

Cool, but most likely too outdated to use..

I Think you bought a "Video Workstation" from a time machine that was probably $7K back in the day :)

Hello all, bakkus here.

First of all: Thank you for such a helpful and well-stocked forum. There's really something for everyone here.
And thank you for keeping the old-school experience of MacOS alive!

I got started on my father's Macintosh 512k way back in the day, worked my way through his SE and SE/30.
Some time in the 90s we migrated to the PC platform, but I always had a soft spot for the Mac.

I was bitten by the nostalgia bug during the various COVID lockdowns, so I'm now a proud owner of various compacts, a IIfx - and an AGP G4 Dual 450MHz which is my main reason for being here on this forum.
Loaded it up with 9.2.2 from the Universal Installer disc, and planning on installing both Gentoo Linux and MorphOS (I just like the tinkering involved)

Thought I'd better say a quick "hello", since someone (not unreasonably perhaps!) thought my first post was a 'bot' post :)
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=6426.msg48149#msg48149

Been a long time Apple user, since my grandma bought home an Apple IIe from her school back in the early 80's. "What an cool, amazing piece of tech" we all thought as we loaded up Transylvania on the monochrome green monitor.

A few years later my dad bought a Mac 512Ke back from the USA (to NZ), complete with heavy step down power transformer (to convert 230 manly NZ volts to 110 of your anaemic American volts). Having developed 'disc swap elbow', after a couple more years, we got a Mac SE 1/20, and at last, we could play the digitised star trek theme that my friend had been able to play because his Mac SE had 1MB of RAM.

Fast forward, and over the years I then owned a Mac IIsi as a uni student, a Quadra 840AV as a second hand purchase - both long since gone...somewhere, I can't remember where.

Nowadays, I'm in the position of being able to collect a bunch of Macs that we could never afford when new. So, I've got an SE w/4MB of RAM and a 40GB compact flash drive, an SE/30 with a 200GB SATA drive and 20MB of RAM, a Powerbook 1400cs, a G4 Titanium Powerbook, a G5 Dual 2.3, and - my latest acquisition purely to boot OS9 - an MDD G4 1Ghz FW800.

I also enjoy tinkering and fixing 'em: the SE/30 has a recapped logic board, a modern 200w mini ATX power supply, and a SilenX fan, for example. My G5 has a 120GB SSD, as does my new G4 (250GB SSD thanks to the 'bibge' adapter, with OS 9.2.2, Tiger and Sorbet Leopard partitions).

Finally, I'm running an AMD 3700x 'hackintosh', with Monterey 12.5 and am looking forward to installing Ventura in a few weeks.

Anyway, I hope that puts to rest 'bot' speculations :)

I've been wanting to introduce myself for probably at least a year now, but every time I've tried to do it, it just hasn't happened....

First I want to say that "grateful" is probably the best word to describe how I feel about this place. I've been reading here since Spring 2019, and there is so much I've learned here - and not going too far to say its probably the biggest reason why I own ANY OS 9 computers today - or rather 3 of them!

DieHard, the other admins, and pretty much everyone in the gold and platinum posters have all helped me connect some dots as I "resurrect" my own knowledge of the classic mac OS - so thank you to everyone that's contributed!

Some of my interests: Photography. Macs. Computer audio. Low-latency computing. Computers with long lifespans...

Skip to your favorite section below:

Macintoshes

I have a long history with "Macintoshes" and got into them as a kid. Sometime between 1987-89, my Dad brought home either an SE/30 or one of its predecessors.  Seeing one of these as a kid was definitely a light bulb moment

*There was a seed planted that "computer-audio" was a thing, as he also brought home ConcertWare (early midi application), a Yamaha synth, and midi connectors that could connect to the SE/30 via serial ports!

My dad's own career was spent managing teams of software engineers in Silicon Valley, so over the years, we had too many Macs to list, but a couple notable ones were the Macintosh Portable, and a pre-production G3 Gossamer. My dad told me the G3 chip was the future for Apple...

But around the Windows NT era, our household began to "diversify" into Windows machines, which is pretty much where I've been ever since - slowly plotting my eventual return to Macs. And installing Hackintoshes, or using emulators.

Finally, about a year ago, I started acquiring OS 9 computers - and I'm slowly figuring out whats possible on these machines today...

I'm trying to figure out whether music production is something I can do and enjoy in OS 9 specifically...

Computer Audio

Around 2014, I started getting into computer audio - on the listening side. I acquired a newer USB DAC, and it was revelation!

I had owned a Creative Audigy 2 - which was nice in the early 2000's. But the newer DACs had detail, staging, and tonality that the Audigy did not - and I was sucked in!

This also began a rabbit hole for me - the USB DAC always had some uncomfortable quality to it that I could never just enjoy the music.  There was some annoyance I was constantly trying to solve for. I made dedicated listening computers. I tried USB de-crapifiers.  I tried digital coaxial - but never properly! And I learned how to strip Windows to the bare essentials, and how to boot Windows from RAM.

All of these things helped, but eventually I implemented a proper coaxial connection to the DAC, and finally I was just enjoying the music again...

The more I enjoy this hobby, the more I think about getting into the music production side...

Low-latency computing

I never "meant" to get into this, but it happened over time as there kept being new reasons to get rid of unneeded software "overhead".

At first, it was useful so that Windows ran decently on older machines.
But it also it seemed to help make ANY machine quicker
Then it turned out to improve audio quality as well... Maybe not to all ears, but it does for mine...
Online gaming scores improved!
If I get into music production, it may help there as well.
It's turned out to be the gift that keeps on giving...

My own experience has typically been stripping Windows to the essentials. Then booting that from RAM. But I also learned to strip early versions of iOS as well...

...Yes, fringe interest, I know... But as it turns out, incredibly useful as well

Computers with long-lifespans

I've noticed that certain computers practically ship with obsolescence built in. Whereas others can be useful in many different directions...

I guess it comes down to expansion options, and what sort of software support exist for the hardware.

The Power Mac G3's and G4's are great examples since you potentially can run as early as OS 8, and as late as Leopard - or now Sorbet Leopard.

On the Windows side of things, if you buy a computer with a certain chipset, you can boot with FULL support for Windows XP all the way through Windows 11 - even though officially, it should support neither XP nor 11, but only everything inbetween...

Reasons its useful:
- sometimes I need to run something natively on an older OS
- You never know when something will run either optimally, or solely on an older OS
- Its MUCH cheaper when you have the option of buying older gear that can do what the newer gear does, but requires older hardware or software.

Alright, I've made this too long already, but hopefully some of the ideas in here resonate with others. I'm hoping to contribute to this place in one way or another as I'm very grateful for how its helped me.

Cheers!

Hello!

Just got into Retro-Youtube and started picking up older G4 Hardware to learn more about 90's software

Powerbook G4 both the 15" and 17"
Looking at getting a Mini G4" later on ebay.

Part of the reason is to learn more about software development history and try out retro-games, music software, and learn about how they worked.
There is a whole community out there on Youtube that is really into retro-software, so that is how I found the macOSLives community!

Hello all of you, Mac OS 9 enthusiasts !

I am Cobus, from France.

The first computer I used on a regular basis was an Apple //e, in 1983.
My entrance in the Mac world was on a Macintosh XL, maybe in 1987. What a change !
In 1993, I owned my first computer : a Powerbook 160. Back then already, I thought that laptops were far more desirable than desktop computers.

Since then, all my personal computers have been Powerbooks or MacBook pros.  ;D
In 1995-2005, Mac addicts were looked down upon. Now, if you are a Mac user, you are trendy.
But I must admit that I don't like what Apple has become.  :-\
Everything is done to lock you into the Apple ecosystem.
You must purchase your apps in the Mac App Store, and use the Apple Cloud.
You must not put your fingers under the hood.
Anyway, you cannot upgrade memory / SSD / anything else anymore.
Neither can you fix your mac if any hardware breaks (iFixIt gave repairability scores of 1/10 to most recent MacBook Pros).

I have been loving macs for years, but sorry, this will be without me.  :'(

My new personal computer will be a Frame.work laptop, with a Linux distro.
iFixIt gave it a repairability score of 9.7/10. Now THIS is repairable !  8)
I may be disappointed by Linux compared to Mac OS, but I want to break free !

Anyway I am not here to promote Linux.
I own a business, where I continue to work with PowerMac G4s under Mac OS 9 on a daily basis.  ;)
I have a Mac Mini G4 1.42 GHz, that I always wanted to convert to Mac OS 9.
One of my PowerMac G4s just died on me (probably a power supply issue).
Now is the right time to replace it with the Mac Mini, thanks to macos9lives !

Hardware things I did for Mac OS 9 computers :
- I replaced the CPU daughterboard of a PowerMac G4 Gigabit Ethernet 400 MHz (motherboard running at 100 MHz) with a faster one from a PowerMac G4 533 MHz. I changed the motherboard speed to 120 MHz and the multiplicator factor. As a result, this computer still runs on a daily basis at 600 MHz !
- I replaced the dead power supply of a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver, with a PC power supply (home made wiring conversion based on informations found on the Web),
- I modified a PowerMac G4 Mirrored Drive Doors to silence it a little (it remains a bit noisy).

Cobus.

How did I get here?
« Reply #710 on: December 09, 2022, 01:06:12 PM »
I guess I've been a Happy Hacker since I was barely more than a child.

My first computer experience was when the company my father worked for brought a clattering Teletype and blazing 110 baud modem to my school and hooked us up to their computer room. I got to write my first program in BASIC when it was a very new language.

That launched me onto a path that involved a Monrobot XI (bet you never heard of that one), an IBM 1620, IBM mainframes in college, an EE degree (digital design), PDP-11 assembly language, Pascal, C, Linux, and a long career in embedded programming.

There were a few really wonderful formative experiences along the way. A friend gave me a PDP-8 Handbook, which took me out of the IBM world. Learning BSD Unix and C programming on a VAX.

And there was the first time I encountered a Macintosh.

Of course, there were some not so wonderful experiences, too. The Intel 8008 and 8086 (pretty pitiful architectures after DEC's minicomputers). MS-DOS (I had seen so much more done on so much less hardware). Windows 1.0 (which looked like someone had briefly glimpsed a Mac screen and cobbled together a cheesy implementation).

Now I've gotten to the point where my professional life has been dialed back to part-time, on call, and I have time for other activities.

So... there was this G4 tower that had been shoved under various tables at work, and finally moved to the "take it away or it's going to the recycler" pile. I brought it home and I'm trying to bring it back to life and install (of course) Mac OS 9.

I'm not a Mac expert, I imagine I'll have a lot of questions for folks here as I get into this.

Well, that was easier than I expected.

My Mac turns out to be a 533 MHz G4 with 1 GB of RAM. It had a 320 GB hard disk in it that seems to be very near its end, it starts to boot Linux (Fedora 12) but that ends with a bunch of disk error messages.

There was another 20 GB drive mounted in the chassis, but not connected. I swapped over to that, booted up the MacOS9Lives! Universal Installer, and after a couple false starts had a successful installation. It's working well with an old Dell display at 1280x1024, using an analog VGA cable.

This machine has suffered a little from being kicked under a desk for years. The speaker output jack is mangled, which leads to complaints about an unrecognized device connected, and advice to unplug it and plug it back in. I'd do that, but the jack is crunched enough that a plug won't go into it.

It's a delightfully retro experience getting acquainted with MacOS 9. My last Mac was a Mac Plus, which I got rid of when I moved a few years ago. Seeing the Mac UI in color with all its new features feels new and old at the same time.

Not bad for free! I guess now I'll go out and spend for a new clock battery  ;D

I'm glad that this site exists! I have many older Macs, and believe that no computer is completely worthless and should be thrown away. I even have a couple of Macintosh Classics running System 6 which I use as art pieces running a slide show of Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies. I have several Macs running OS9 including a B&W G3 and G4 Sawtooth, Digital Audio, and Quicksilver. Lots of other newer machines as well.

I found this site while searching for a 9.2.2 boot/installation disc - I only had 9.2.0 and I wanted to get the last version possible.

I'm also deep into figuring out video card flashing, in an effort to have three monitors running on the Quicksilver. It's an absolute nightmare with all of the various cards by different manufacturers, and finding compatible roms. I'll be posting some questions, and a few discoveries I'm sure.

Hello, it's been a while since I've posted so I thought I'd give an update.  My Quicksilver sees several hours of use nearly every day and has been super reliable.  I replaced the main case fan last week because it was generating noise but that's literally been my only problem with the computer.  I've upgraded the video card to the Apple ti4600, added 64 bit Firewire, a 5 port USB card and a M-Audio Audiophile 2496.  The software I use most are Traktor DJ Studio 2, Spark XL and Digital Performer 3.  I've had maddening issues with MIDI.  I can't get a DJ controller or even a MIDI keyboard to work properly in OS 9.  I've gotten pretty good at controlling Traktor with the keyboard and mouse.

I wanted to say hello, and thanks for providing such an awesome resource.

I'm a long time enthusiast of "redundant" technologies and enjoy using all sorts of machines that other people would count as trash. My main interest in computers is for making music, and recently my studio has revolved around an Amiga 1200 running Octamed and a few older (Windows 98 era) PCs, mostly running old MIDI-only versions Cubase.

I stumbled across this site thanks to a recommendation from chrisnova777 when I posted on oldschooldaw.com - trying to set up my newly bought G4 DA to run PlayerPro.

This site has opened a rabbit hole for me and I have very quickly amassed a collection of 3 OS9 compatible macintosh machines, in addition to the G4 I now have a G3 imac and a blue and white G3.

This era is an evocative one for me as I started playing with MIDI and audio applications on a cheap PC in the late 90s - while I liked what I could do with the PC and Cakewalk, I was always painfully aware that a Mac was the way to go. I had frustrations with MIDI timing and never had any luck getting Cubase VST to work on properly my PC (although I had some midi-only fun with Cubase Audio XT) Since then I had brief dalliances with Ataris and older Macs, using Cubase, and finding it way more intuitive musical than Cakewalk.

I'm so far finding that Cubase 5.1 VST on the mac is a great way to work in a comfortable (and hopefully solid) MIDI environment with the added bonus of decent audio support, virtual instruments and fx. I haven't made much music yet but it feels right.

I'm also excited about learning how to use PlayerPro and  Studio Vision - they both seem to offer a unique take on music making. I'm hoping I'll be able to program my DX11 using Sound Diver (haven't managed to make it work yet) and wondering how long it is before I can no longer resist the temptation to have a proper play with classic Logic (I gave up on it years ago on PC as I could never get it to work).

I haven't yet found a replacement for Sound Forge for editing samples and audio files - I remember Bias Peak being completely unintuitive and that still seems to be the case, but I'm sure I'll find a way to achieve what I want to one way or another.

Anyway all very exciting to me - I feel like I am working with state-of-the art equipment and the age and £40 price tag is irrelevant. Or perhaps it's the appeal.

Anyway, I've got a new (old) RME multiface to set up, and a B&W g3 to test out, and loads of new software to install and learn...not to mention music to make... so I shouldn't ramble any more... but again, thank you and hello.

No doubt I'll be back with questions. ;D

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a Mac mini A1103 with OS 9 and while searching found this site. I'm really interested at this point on seeing how I can run some older programs designed to run on OS 7 & 8 on the mini. If that is possible that way or if I have to partition the drive and load the OS's.

I'm really interested at this point on seeing how I can run some older programs designed to run on OS 7 & 8 on the mini. If that is possible that way or if I have to partition the drive and load the OS's.

In Mac OS 9 you can run some Mac programs even from 1986, but not all.
My approximation is that 80% of MacOS 8 programs work and 50% System 7 programs work. and about 1% from System 1.
Many old software needs drop resolutions and colors as low as possible.
And I still interested in how to get 2 color mode in Mac OS 9.

Hi everyone!

Age and nostalgia catch up to you (you have been warned!) so I've found my way back to wanting to play with the old tools again - so glad I found this place! :)

I've been dreaming about a simple MIDI system with MTP for a while now so I've started hunting down some old hardware to experiment with. It's amazing to find so much stuff still available that we tossed (quite literally) in the garbage decades back and we updated to new technology. If only I had a Time Machine...

I've been using Mac since the mid-80's and started with Master Tracks Pro before moving to Studio Vision Pro, Cubase, Digital Performer, and eventually landing in Logic (and I'm still there today...) It's a trip through the fizzling neurons somewhere in the back of my head as I'm looking around here, so I look forward to your experiences and help as I get my '9 Legs' back.

Thanks for a great site, and hoping I can be of some help as I trudge forward.

For fun I found a few pics of our setups from '04 and '06 - enjoy!

Awesome pics !

Damn, that Korg Triton in Pic (2) looks brand new, Do you still have it ?

I still have a TR-RACK, but Triton left me a long time ago... if anyone bought the software version I would love their opinion

“ Damn, that Korg Triton in Pic (2) looks brand new, Do you still have it ?”

I wish! All of that hardware is long gone - went pretty much Virtual by 2010 except for a few analog bits I couldn’t bear to part with.

I do think I have the Korg Collection version of the Triton, but really haven’t toyed around with it. I like their M1 Plugin a lot, so sure the Triton is similar in quality/features. The original Legacy Collection was one of the main reasons I went Virtual - they sound identical to the hardware, and a lot less real estate to deal with.

Digging in storage for my build and surprisingly amazed at what I've kept. Curious if that MTP Disk still works...

I recall having a 12-port hub for peripherals and Dongles - now I remember why!

got another firewire hub (redundancy), another BD burner (redunancy), and another monitor (redundancy) as spare parts, just in case.

already ordered ist a another HD enclosure 12V PSU (replacement)

today i ordered the next pair of HDs for the second external NAS and/or firewire cases which are 2,5" this time.
the 10 years old big 2 TB HDs are still 25 euros, and the cheapest small ones are now 44 euro and already much faster and have 128 cache, so i guess from now on i can buy those new even with my lean budget.

maybe i need to get another keyboard (quicksilver area) soon, i have several but they are all black and in between i think white might better readable in the dark.
or would you recommend to use a later (plastic with USB at the backside or even metal) model?

on my wishlist there is a set of new fans for the QS, but i am not sure when to actually do this.

then i need to find another monitor cable, 5 meters, which supports WUXGA and is under 50 euros. the one i found last year is no longer sold anywhere and absolutely everwhere there are only cables for 12 euro (which do not work) or professional installation cables for 250 euros (am i crazy?) and nothing in between.

what goes totally on my nerves is that when you connect externals speakers to the QS, they mute the internal speaker so you have to unplug them to switch back to internal. not sure how a solution could look like and if it will be enough to buy some part and replace it using some violence. ;)

p.s. ah, and i have legalized my nuendo 3 for an upcoming project, but as you know this has nothing to do with PPC.

Man, I love all of you. :)

I got my Test Machine yesterday afternoon (G3 iBook 800, 640RAM, 30GB HDD (Still works!) and my SSD upgrade arrived today (have to steel myself for that one, so testing everything first before I climb that mountain of an install)

I got 9.2.2 installed, Stuffit Expander and Toast cooking, Logic 6.4 up and running, and finally got OMS working with an old Midiman 2x2. I couldn't have gotten this far without all the info and help here. All of you just Rock - thanks so much!

I *did* get Master Tracks Pro 5 and 6 installed. 5 works, but no OMS (I'm USB only here) and 6 works fine after the struggles with OMS, but crashes after recording. I seem to recall that's when I stopped using it because of this back in the day...

However, I did find in my stash a CD with the MTP 6.8.3 Installer on it - but I have no 'Password' for the Installer (VISE) and not sure if needs a Serial or if the V6 on floating around will work. Any help on this would be appreciated!

Again, thanks everyone - could not have done this with all of you here.

Hi everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself and provide a little background.

Been an Apple enthusiast since around 2000. I was solely PC before that (mostly for gaming) but when OS X came out I was intrigued due to its UNIX underpinnings. At this point I was also getting into Linux and sorely desired *nix experience with a polished GUI. So I bought a titanium PowerBook G4 with a cracked screen from eBay since that was all I could afford  ;D

That was followed by an used eMac and then a few years later my first new purchase from the Apple Store, an Intel Aluminum MacBook Pro. Since then I've used mainly Apple laptops but am now daily driving an M2 Pro Mac Mini. Still, I never owned a Power Macintosh...

Which brings us to the present day. I've been wanting to get into retro computers for a while now and a few weeks back stumbled across some YouTube videos on the subject. That inspired me to pick up the following:

Apple Power Macintosh G4 1.0 DP (MDD)
Apple Power Macintosh G4 1.0 (FW 800)
23" Apple Cinema Display HD
2 x LaCie External FW Optical Drives
PCI SATA Adaptor
Adaptec 29160N Ultra160 SCSI Adaptor
M-Audio FireWire Audiophile Recording Interface
AGP BFG Geforce 7800GS OC (to flash)
Dell Dimension 4550 (to flash the GPU)
And of course, lots of other adaptors, drives, cables, etc.

My end game for all of this is to have a sort of Retro Computer Room where I can have 4-5 working machines going.

So I'm very happy and excited to be here since I rather suspect I am among kindred spirits :)
Have loved computers of all kinds since I was a kid and managed to turn it into a successful career doing DevOps for a Fortune 500 company. Less enthusiastic about current macOS and Apple hardware these days but hey, it's still better than Windows, right? ;)

Hello everyone!

I am alfaxysm and I'm a digital artist mainly keen on electronic music production and graphic design, especially motion visuals, largely inspired by aesthetics from the turn of the millennium.

I decided to join you all after I finally found myself a computer capable of running OS 9, that actually works. It's the late 2001 revision of the iBook G3, currently running OSX 10.2 - no worries though, I am planning to get OS 9 on there instead. That's why I'm here after all! =)

I don't have any past experience with this OS on bare metal, so I'm really excited to try it out for the first time, the proper way, without any of that virtualization business. I'm sure it will be a fun journey for me, especially because pretty much all the creative software I need and use on a daily basis is available on this platform. And the fact that working with older software actually makes me feel more productive and focused on the creative work, without any distractions that my main PC provides me with.

Cheers!

A short introduction currently have a PowerBook 170 8/80 and a power Mac 8600/300 trying to add a G4 system that's mid range price n the SF Bay area. My favorite machines were a Mac plus (used as a kid young) Mac iici, Quadra 660av, duo 280c, g3 Aio and G4 da.

Does anyone know the most reliable desktop G4 system model/s to that have held up?

My 8600/300 is a tank, and trooper. The PowerBook 170 still works knock on wood... Unfortunately all the PowerBook I had like duos , even an iBook died, by 2013 and even the power supplies. Wish I had kept them intact or  known about capacitors and such. Lol

Newbie here with an iBook G4 and an unfortunate upgrade to Mac OS 10.5.4 from OS 9 Classic, long long ago...
Now needing the OS 9 Classic for an ancient medical program, that requires classic, so I am praying this is the place to be to revert it to its former glory.  (No original OS 9 disk to be found... I looked everywhere).

Thank so much!

Hi all,

Just joined from the UK. Recently acquired a couple of G3’s and G4’s, a bit out of my comfort zone with these machines as always been a PC fan (going back 30’s years). Never dipped my toe in to Mac waters apart from I had a first gen MacBook Air some years back.

Looking forward to trying to get these machines to work and OS installed etc.

Hopefully it won’t make me lose what remains of my hair…! -afro-

Hello everyone. My name is Aaron. I am writing this post from my trusty old Power Mac 733 GHz with 1gb ram and running os 9.2.2. Up until 2011 I used this machine regularly to record music. It sat idle for nearly 12 years, I just fired it back up and it carries on from where it left off! (did change the battery though!)

I did use this website in the past, for advice regarding software etc. so this website i always found very helpful. Thank you!

I have to say, even in 2023 this machine is still quite useable with classilla browser and with the patched iTunes, you get a much better music experience than the modern itunes! real radio stations!

May OS9 live on forever!!!

Hi I'm Joe I'm in the UK.
I had a few Macs in the 1990s, most memorably a 5200 that eventually became a 5500 with a sonnet crescendo.  But eventually I ran out of room so it had to go and I've pretty much missed it ever since.  I had one of the old fruity iMacs but didn't really like it, and was thinking to eventually get a usb-based g3 or g4 Mac for OS9.  Thrilled to see OS9 can now be run on a G4 mini so bought one (well, two...).  Hopefully I can get my old files out of sheepshaver which I had installed somewhere.  Think unfortunately I don't still have the disks for the old games I had, but we'll see.

Hello Igor and Welcome to the Forum!

And yes, while English is the primary language here - we all attempt to speak “Macintosh” [regardless of our native tongues]. And quite often, even that can be difficult for some - whose native language IS English. ;)

A quick and effortless trip to Google Translate, provides the following:

You might try the Universal 9.2.2 Installer download:
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,2109.0.html

OR, MacTron’s Bootable Rescue CD & Disk Repair download:
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,1657.0.html

So, good luck with that M8493 (“Quicksilver”?) and let us know how it goes.

And do try to translate future posts into English first.
So that no one might get their panties in a bunch. ::)

Found this community from watching Youtube channels that were repairing old mac computers.
But after the Steam store started doing more retro releases and charging higher prices for older games, thought why not just buy the classic hardware and have a better experience!

Thought it would be fun to buy one and put together a retro mac gaming machine.
Happy to join the community hear and learn more about retro software on OS9
