M-Audio Audiophile 2496 vs Midiman PCI Audio (DMAN PCI)
« on: October 24, 2014, 04:15:36 PM »
The board looks different... but all the I/O are identical. are there any differences besides one being newer?

here is the  midiman version

&
here is the m-audio version

Please let me know.

the main difference is the chip..
the audiophile2496 is using a the same chip as the rest of the delta series
and is compatible when used in combination with other delta cards to use the same delta driver

the dman, probably is not able to be combined with other cards because it doesnt use the ice chip.
it says "crystal" on the chip .. its clear that the design of the ap2496 was reversioned from the dman
and updated to use a higher quality chip

the other difference is tht it would be rare to find a dman pci as they were never mass produced anywhere close to the amount of ap2496

Unfortunately looks are deceiveing… they are not even a close comaprison…

DMAN PCI:
18-bit delta-sigma A/D and D/A converters, 16-bit (or 8-bit) data path.
DAC's vary. All of the low enders from AKM and Crystal are delta sigma with on-board opamps for volatge outputs, most not very good at all.
Basically an OP amp (operational amplifier) that is used in the input stage (before A to D) is a key component for a crisp, clear, signal and it is better to have it as a separate component then integrated one as used in the DMAN.

2496:
All audio channels support 24-bit data width and any sampling rate from 8kHz to 96kHz.

Converters used
Audiophile 192 AKM AK5385A AK4358
Audiophile 2496 AK4528VF AK4528VF CS8427
Delta44 & 66 AK4524
Delta1010 A/D AK5383 D/A AK4393

The DMAN PCI looses in ALL categories…
The 2496 has a better clock, better converters, a greater data path (true 24 bit recording on hardware level), higher sample rate (up to 96K), better drivers, etc… basically, besides the similar appearance, the only thing in common is that they are both PCI cards

Yikes!!!

I found a good deal on eBay, thinking it was a 2496. I've used the audiophile with my g5 and I absolutly loved it. I knew I should've kept it....

Well gotta do a return I guess.

that dman card will definatley not be compatible with a g5..

but it can be used in a mac g4 i think..
if u have any other delta cards to try to combine it with id be interested to know if its possible
but i highly doubt it.

is there a driver for DMAN PCI for OS 9 & OS X (10.4)?

i dont think so.. u could try the driver for the dman 2044 but yes the dman pci is pc only i think
sorry i thought there was but apparently not....
i pay more attention to other cards that allow for more channels such as the delta 410, and delta 1010

Converters used
Audiophile 192 AKM AK5385A AK4358
Audiophile 2496 AK4528VF AK4528VF CS8427
Delta44 & 66 AK4524
Delta1010 A/D AK5383 D/A AK4393

all of these converters are made by the same company
Asahi Kasei Microsystems http://www.akm.com/
so why is one better then the other?

Do you really want me to answer that ?   Guess So... Apogee uses ASAHI KASEI and so does Motu... guess people like to spend money for no reason.... or... maybe there is a reason

My hand hurts so I will give a quick answer...

Fisrtly...
Quote
Knowing you have a MOTU interface, for example, with X converter chip is not a clear explanation of all of the particulars involved with that converter. We know nothing of the PLL, we know nothing of the noise suppression techniques employed, we know nothing of the filtering, the clocking, the circuit layout, the objectives and methodology of the evaluator when they are determining what to publish as specs, etc...

also... we must get a little background on jigger and other terms... this is excellent...

Also this guy brings up a few good points...
http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/02/jitter-does-it-matter.html

Now, back to the question...

Yes, the chips and the way they are used are very different (and thus the results), I know you like pics... check out the work put into this baby... $1000 (well at least $800) DAC and Headphone amp
Pretty Funny... costs more that most here have paid for their G4, interface, and Mic

Richard Kulavik of Asahi Kasei Semiconductors explains why.

how much do u want for the dman
http://web.archive.org/web/19990210174525/http://www.midiman.net/DMANST.HTM

i just read it has windows 3.1 drivers available for it
whereas the delta 410 has no 3.1 windows drivers

hmm did yours come with driver cd?
the windows 3.1 driver link doesnt work on web archive;(
http://web.archive.org/web/19981207012951/http://www.midiman.net/drivers.htm

maybe this is it?
http://www.treiberupdate.de/treiber-download/alle-treiber-MIDIMAN+DMAN+Audio+Card+16Bit+48kHz+ISA+Audio+Card-0.html

i think theres a crapload of cheap sound cards u can get with these crystal chips
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xcrystal+sound+pci&_nkw=crystal+sound+pci&_sacat=0

they are all pc only tho i think..
maybe someone could find a way to make them work on mac??

notice the dman says "cs4614"
i see some turtle beach cards also used this crystal series type chip

just realized i think the dman ISA card is the one that has the win3.1 drivers probably - not the DMAN PCI

the i/o isnt identical because the 2496 has spdif on the midi break out
and the dman has a wavetable header on the card itself

The Dman 2044 did not like my QuickSilver G4 at all. Kept giving me bus error everytime I tried to get it going. But my Delta 1010 has been relatively flawless, except it crashes when in sound manager mode.

That is often because of a conflict between Sound Manager and an ASIO driver being used by your DAW or other app. If you have an ASIO folder, pull the Sound manager driver out of it.

This issue crops up with apps that have no ASIO option, such as chimes from OS9 and Bias Peak which I don’t believe has an ASIO option. I’ll look further into it, but every app that has ASIO support I have zero issues with.

In order to reach the Delta 1010 with any app, that app must have an ASIO driver. Otherwise, the connection defaults to the built-in audio.

Attached is the Peak ASIO folder from my Delta 1010 MDD installation. It should work on yours as well.
The ASIO folder must be in the Peak main folder alongside the app.

I have no idea what "Chimes" even is…
