unable to drag document to application icon?

does anyone know how to fix this.. ie: trying to drag a .sit to stuffit deluxe and when i drag the file to the icon the icon doesnt light up and let me start the app with the file to open the file
is this because there is a problem with the applications installation? is there any quick fix for this other then reinstalling the application?
