FTP Transfer freezing
« on: September 25, 2014, 07:03:53 PM »
I have a HD shared all over my network that I store my mp3s on and it's only when I'm downloading stuff from that particular folder that the errors occur. Everything else works 100%. I first noticed this on my MDD G4 in OS9 but I also notice it happening on my 9600 in both OS8.6 and OS7.6.1. It's the absolute worst in OS7.6.1, I'm not even going to attempt transferring them from there.

Something I noticed is that Fetch is having to rename a lot of the files since they're too long and oldschool Macs apparently can't handle long filenames. That's not always the problem though because sometimes it works, sometimes it freezes. It seems to happen at random. Does anyone have any idea?

yep u have a filename that is too long i think..
mac os 9 doesnt allow filenames longer then 31 character?
if i click a file like this my fileshare disconnects and i have to reconnect

its definately to do with filenames.. either characters.. or length
what operating system & filesystem is the hard drive that is shared in?

The filename length was definitely a problem, however I found that it would crash even when some of the filenames weren't that long.

The server is a Windows 7 machine, should be NTFS.

yea windows 7 in my mind isnt really cut out for server duty:D
more of a multimedia client..
u should run a NAS off a thumbdrive;)
needs 4gb+ ram, intel core cpu

but yea. regardless of that suggestion..
maybe its to do with NTFS..
im guessing its a samba share? maybe check what samba version it  uses?
how do u connect to it?
just by FTP? or "Windows filesharing"?

if u look up samba errors on google
there are MANY
http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/59923/samba-share-on-mountain-lion-freezes

in all the times i tried to do networking at home
was always with windows + samba servers
+ i always had headaches + things to fix

untill lately with my NAS + AFP
and its been 100% smooth sailing..
very little errors
insanely reliable
i love it

Everything has worked 100% and I haven't gotten a single crash when transferring files, EXCEPT from that damn mp3 folder. It's weird. Sometimes even if the files aren't too long it freezes, but sometimes not too. Not sure what's happening.

I'm running FileZilla Server on my Windows machine and I use the Fetch + Transmit clients on my Mac machines. Transmit is the worst about crashing, Fetch works better. Both still freeze my entire Mac at random though.

filezilla can have alot of problems like this
i had huge problems using that before aswell
wierd things i couldnt explain that made no sense

why dont u try installing IIS instead and using windows own ftp server
using windows to serve to a mac isnt a good move in my opinion.
not because its wrong to do.. u can do it.
but u could have so much better integration with an afp capable server
like mac os x or nas4free for dedicated file server..
i use windows 7 in fact im using it right now..
but not as a server.. forget that!!!
windows 7 is a client os...
windows 2000 or windows server 2003 maybe if i had to run windows as a server
but id rather run a snow leopard hackintosh as a server then windows!!
or better yet.. ubuntu linux

i wonder if its possible to run pure darwin http://www.puredarwin.org/

seriously theres way more kick ass options then using filezilla on windows 7 to serve up files to a mac
if u would try out this nas4free software.. it acts as a "go between" for any os
serving files via Samba to windows.. and via AFP to macs..
so each pc/mac gets to speak its native language to access the same stuff

because it uses AFP u can drag mac files to it without encoding them to binary or stuffing them without fear
this is really handy when ur busy doing other htings and dont have time to stop and package files

do tehse files have any funky characters in the file name?
i wonder if u could somehow have the filenames translated dynamically to the client without changing the filenames on the server

I'm thinking it's just the OS/Software combo. I don't have that problem at all on other Windows machines or OSX. I think I'll just bite the bullet and not worry about it. OS7.6.1 is definitely the worst when it comes to it, there's got to be something going on behind the scenes in the OS that's causing all the crashes. With OS8/OS9 I'm pretty certain it's just the filenames.

u know what i just had the idea
is it becasue the folder path is too long?
is it within many other folders..? the hierarachy?
if so move the folder to the root? and try it then?

I took the HD out of my 9600 and popped it into my G4. OS9 and Fetch are transferring them almost with flying colors, it's just those long filenames that I need to avoid.

I guess that ancient system + OS7.6.1 just can't handle it for some reason.
