G4 or G5 v.s. Pentium 4 (New User)
« on: September 07, 2014, 03:35:19 PM »
Hi guys & gals,

Great forum and site! I can't wait to switch to Mac as I've been trying to have a DAW on Windows for 15 years...with headaches!
I'm scanning ebay for Macs and am ready to pull the trigger on a few after looking at the specs and needs from this site but still have a few questions.

Right now I have a Gateway 507GR that has XP, 300 GHZ, Front side bus 800 MHz and 1 GB ram. Optimized with every tweak possible but still get annoying problems, dropouts, vst eating cpu, etc.

Is a G4 or G5 faster than my current setup?

I do background music for commercials and ads and do all kinds of different genres. Sometimes it's just a 5-piece band or sometimes it's all vst synth heavy.
I don't mind using older software, I just want something that has low latency and minimal problems. Seriously can't stand Windows, LOL.

I appreciate the help and look forward to being a member.
Thanks!

if you have a 800mhz fsb that leads me to guess you are talking about a pentium 4 cpu
which is notorious for being more power hungry, and hot requiring lots of cooling..
i would reccomend selling off the p4 cpu + motherboard for $10 .. and as diehard once said.. 'buy yourself a sandwhich' lol

if u want to explore the pc side of things u can check out my forum www.oldschooldaw.com
things on this site are to be kept centered on mac os 9 / powerpc
while the mac os 9 ppc cpu isnt going to be stronger in cpu power its the software
that we appreciate most that was written exclusively for it.. and thats why we see benefit in it (if i was to speak for all)

but yes, to make the most of your current hardware i would reccomend getting a socket 775 intel core cpu and rebuilding the machine
with a socket 775 motherboard (perhaps asus, intel, gigabyte motherboard) or you might keep whatever peripherals from your p4 system
and buy a powerpc g4 quicksilver or mdd and move your drives + whatever otehr hardware that is compatible over to be used with the mac
cannibalizing the pc so to speak:D

ah i see now u put p4 int he topic so u must be well aware.

to your original question.. is the g5 faster then the p4?
i can show u some of my own benchmarks linked on my signature... if u click this geekbench link and then click "Geekbench2" tab

2450612    Asus P5S800-VM (2006)    Intel Pentium 4 531/630    3152    1    Windows    x86    32    1090
2450943    Power Mac G5 1.8ghz (2003)    PowerPC G5 (970)    1800    1    Mac OS X    PPC    32    1080
2450452    Asus P4B533 (2002)    Intel Pentium 4 2.40GHz    2433    1    Windows    x86    32    1022

these are some of my own results.. as u can see the speeds are in the same neighbourhood + comparable... and these are from some machines that are pretty normal.. the g5 that i have is the single 1.8ghz 2003 g5 - also notice that the g5 is at 1.8ghz and the p4 is at 2.4 + 3.0 ghz and the benchmark results are still comparible.. if the g5 was rated atthe same mhz speed it would undoubtedly kick the crap out of the p4.. maybe i could find some results of the last generation desktop g5s (970MP cpu type) vs the last generation p4s (Cedar mill?)

other things to note tho the g5 machines are notorious for unexplained freezes + hangs.. + problems with both water + air cooling.. i think the best buy for music is the FX series 2004 models
which are i think less likely to have these cooling problems and issues with freezes and they are compatible with pci hardware still whereas the 2005 MP series g5's are not compatible with pci hardware and feature pci-express slots.. i dont think u mentioned which audio io u were using so i cant say for sure. but.. i cant say i reccomend a g5... if i had no computer + lost all my own current stuff first thing i would do is buy a g4 MDD... and also a good intel powered pc or mac.. anything from 2008 + will do just great

the g5 cpus generations are:
Quote
970 (2003), 970FX (2004), 970MP (2005), 970GX (2006)
so its the first generation g5..

remember tho, u can't run mac os 9 on a g5 for any real music purposes you would have to run panther or tiger on that machine.
so im sure if you wanted to partake of the fruits of this site.. u would want to focus on a real powerpc g4 machine

Wow! Thanks Chris!

I'm using the EMU 1212m pci as my soundcard, wonder if that will work in a mac...

As for the software on OS9, what daw is most popular or stable? I use ableton now but have worked with Cubase as well. Wouldn't matter, I'd learn a new program if it was what I needed.

I just want something more reliable. I like old tanks!

Thanks again!

that interface wont work in any mac

re software i prefer ableton + cubase ... i work in reason + ableton when being creative..
and then i load up ableton rewired to cubase to get ready for post production.

im trying to learn more of logic + dp + protools (not to mention other softwares too)
