Trying to defrag Mac OS 9.2.2 disk
« on: August 11, 2014, 07:48:04 AM »
Hello,
I got Norton Utilities 6.03 from here to defrag my main HD. However, Speed Disk refuses to defrag it saying there are Crosslinked Files. Disk Doctor is not found on the package from here (and not recommended as well, from what I read). Disk First Aid seems to be worthless trying to fix it (I ran several times, but it always runs into the same errors). Is there any possible way to fix this? I'm booting into Mac OS 8.6 just to make sure there are no files in use on my OS 9.2.2 HD.

Thank you, already did. Can I do something like that with an OS X install disk? How about Techtool Pro, can it repair partitions?

Well, it seems I reached an endless loop. Disk First Aid will always run into problems no matter how many times I click on repair, while Techtool Pro sometimes finds bitmap problems but always on the same spot, but fixes it. I'm trying Norton Volume Recover to rebuild information to see if it changes anything (edit: nope, turns out it's not made for that).

DiskWarrior 2.1 is the tool you will need now. It is for System 7.1 to 9.2.2, and still sold by "Alsoft".  It repaired all my broken discs in the past, when all other tools failed.
And generally I would recommend to not use any of the norton tools with Mac OS 8.x or 9.x as I ran into several problems like you.

you might want to defrag just per file -> go to list window, select a third of the files, defrag, repeat until you find the files which wont work.

crosslinked files are seldom ... i hope you are not trying to defrag your OSX system install? :)

Try doing a surface scan for bad blocks using either Techtool Pro and Disk Setup.

i think my problems were caused from the drive itself over heating the mdd case was closed and i just realized the larger fan inside the mdd was disconnected so i think it was extremely hot inside and the drive is right beside the cpu heatsink of course...

If the damage is physical you should run a surface test.

he said its crosslinked files.

it is one of the major faults of norton DD that you can not choose what checks and repairs you can do ... you have to start all, then skip physcial check. :)

Now we're trying to help chrisNova777 with something different.

The same thing started to happen with me as well, but TechTool Pro was able to repair it, as well as Diskwarrior (it happened twice today, so I had to do 2 repairs). Anyways, I tried to Update Drivers using Disk Setup 2.1 to see if it stops the data corruption.

Classilla was open both times. But the damage was rather in the volume structure than in the file structure. I hope it stopped once in for all.
