how to use pro tools 5 with VST plugins + REWIRE applications
« on: August 03, 2014, 02:13:03 PM »
ok so..
i wanna use pro tools but
unless your not 100% hardware based... or recording a live band..
how do i use pro tools on mac os 9?

given that i rely alot on virtual instruments... pro tools has no support for VST or REWIRE
.. which is BRUTAL.

so, we are forced to come up with other methods.. thankfully WE HAVE THESE SOLUTIONS!!!

DOWNLOAD LINK : http://www.wildfrontear.co.uk/standalones/Multi%20VST%20Shell%20SA.sit
amazingly http://www.wildfrontear.co.uk/ lists a universal binary format of the app aswell

this app allows up to 4 vst's to be loaded into pro tools

using leigh marbles http://www.refusesoftware.com/ugly

makes this possible also, but with only 1 vsti at a time, rather then 4 with the above multishell app
DOWNLOAD LINK : http://www.refusesoftware.com/ugly (click mac os 9)

can we get some testimonials + real world experience frm any of our pro tools users
on how well these solutions work? or if they work at all?

is it possible to produce on pro tools using VST virtual instruments?

dont forget the rewire solution
REfUSE
http://www.refusesoftware.com/refuse

allows realtime seamless production between pro tools + reason or protools + ableton live

is this multiVSTshell functional?
does it work?
is it a demo?
has anyone even TRIED to do this?
do we have any real pro tools users that actually USE pro tools 5?

Are we alone in the universe?
 ;D
I use protools 5 le on recordings that people call me to do in their practice room.
Not a single click or virtual instrument.
Just as multitrack.
My main Daw is protools 9
 :P
Looking for MacOS 9.2.4

a final way to do this would also be to disable rewire completely and use a 2ndary asio device physically wired to pro tools! then you wouldnt need refuse or rewire at all!

how to do this is explained in our propellerhead forum!

incase this helps anyone.

I can not stand modern DAWS. ProTools 5.1.3 has spoiled me for 2 decades.
But I really dig some of the modern VST/FX and VST/Interments

So I have a modern windows PC 100% slaved to chase Vintage OS9 ProTools 5.1.3

This is the combo to do that;
Host - MDD G4 / OS9 / Digidesign Mix Plus system / Mark of the Unicorn Midi Time Piece AV USB
Slave - Win10 PC / running Cantabile / Focusrite USBC I/O / MTC & Midi clock via 5 pin midi from MTPAV

https://www.cantabilesoftware.com/free-vst-host
this is the only VST sandbox I like, Ableton makes me want to poke my eyes out. Avid wants a subscription Booooo
Cantible is just a playground to drag and drop VSTs and interconnect them. and save that combo for easy recall.
I have made some SUPER wild presets mixing  Kilohearts, Arturia, and IKmultimedia VSTs
https://kilohearts.com/?AFFILIATE=3117&__c=1

Cantible lets you route anything anywhere like a modular synth.
I added 2x patch cables to route (focusrite 18I20) channels 7/8out into 5/6in. OMG now you can drop a pitch shifter and
all manner of inappropriate FX onto a feedback return.
OMG!! Can you say fully manipulatable hidef earthquaker devices rainbow machine or digitech space station

To be very honest I have to really really want something PT5 and the gear it interfaces CAN NOT DO
to fire up the PC open up an Aux channel(s) or stereo channel(s) in record to pull things over.
the myriad of TDM plugs like TC MegaReverb and Line 6 Echo Farm cover so much ground
TDM Access Virus (Red / classic) could replace most of my real synth collection (pro3 and 2600clone excluded)
side note the Eventide MixingLink and 40 year pedal collection goes really far at broadening a pallet

cantabile/gigperformen/max are by far more interesting than those streamlined solutions a la Steinberg VST rack or DSound GT player - for the reason you said.

oh i will totally get my g4 mix rig soon. the seller is on holidays for a week. its coming. :D

im gonna use a maxed out pc running pt12.5 for compatibility - lyx hilo usb - adat - digidesign adat bridge - g4 with mix core+2farm - magma chassis with 2 more farm cards (looking to find more farm and dsp cards).

now hear me out. i still need to host some 1998 cubase vst mac os and tie it in with my modern pro tools or the os9. ive been looking for a solution for days now. i need to automate them.

- 32 lives and patchwork on a mojave mac?
- jbridgeM on a mojave mac?
- go snow leopard for ppc compatibility?
- can i host them in pro tools os9 somehow?
- emagic logic with tdm on os9? -> if anyone can find me a dongle that would be the perfect solution

the by far coolest thing would be blue cat connector support for os9. i emailed them but i think apple is the one not allowing it if i understand them correctly. thats why i initially sold my 5.1 - apple has changed from creating a legacy to creating a good quartal for their investors.

it is totally unclear to me how your setup looks like.

if you are looking for a total integration of 2 DAWs on different computers i would say forget it; the existing standards for that are all network based and none of them supports MacOS9.

and while this might be only an "opinion"... if you have run a mac pro 2019 or a modern ryzen win PC anyway, i wouldnt bother about protools mix - a modern machine can run more plug-ins on a single core. :)

what worked great in the past is to run cubase as midi seqeuncer side by by side with PT 3 / PT 4, when PT had no midi.

you might also try to run rewire.

but with externals computers you are really free to use the second machine like you want, at the cost of latency and bidirectional data transfer.

i see.

well honestly i would just replace maximizer, spectralizer, and truetape with something better today.

the legacy 32bit cubase-chained, native VST plug-ins were floating around in the warezscene some years ago, maybe you could use them with 32 lives inside fxpansion wrapper? at least under windows, that is. i would not bet on Mac ARM.

thats what i currently do. and it appears besides slaving two macs together with mtc and tons of hardware to keep it sync thats the easier route. since win10 can still work with 32 bit code at all. hate hate running windows.

edit: or. i could prepare a session on modern pro tools. then move the stems to a os9 rig with oms and freemidi slaving cubase or logic to pro tools.

its just that in days of sheepshaver and bluecat connector there really isnt another way. stunning.

dunno if anyone uses it here but it should run

PT 5.1.3 has Midi that works pretty good for me.
my rig now has 4x MTP A/V are maxed out
plus  Two!!! KeyStep Pro sequencers chasing PT5 in real time.
(2002 Digidesign interfaceing with 2019 Arturia *all props to* DAVE SMITH!! RIP)
Hihats are dead on with in .007 seconds latency with no Midi timing offset!

older video but it makes a point about using PT5 integrated midi

i will get the SDD and DP3.
DP3 can do vst or tdm communication.
so a mix core and 2 farm cards in the sdd g4.
hooked up with a 192 on legacy port.
talking to another 192 that gets the audio to
and from a modern rig with hdx.
this way i can send and recieve and automate stuff.

also in all honesty dp3 looks amazing. as does the sdd.
