DVD burner in a G4
« on: August 01, 2014, 03:41:56 PM »
i need a new DVD burner for my G4-based livingroom and this time i would like to just plug it into the QS 933 instead of going the firewire route. (my last burners were destroyed from a f.u. fw enclosure)

there is one little point i am worrying about, and that is that i dont want to loose the booting capability.

what is your experience with replacing the default drives with something better? can you run into situations where a modern third party DVD drive will refuse to boot into OS9 and/or OSX from CD/DVD?

and is is still possible to find burners where you can easily remove the front panel (to make it fit into the G4 drive door?). i dont want to chainsaw it if possible.

... at 15€ each one. All were made on january and in february of 2014.

But it is SATA, so it need as SATA PCI card or a SATA to PATA adapter.

SATA would be an option, but i think i would only spend one SATA connection for a BD burner. :)

and i need fast DVD ROM options so i will have to spend up to 50 euro (local store) i think.

u are joking about this right? its been this way since about 2008.. only the last 6-7 years.. have u been sleeping ?
firewire (Fw400) has been dissappearing off the face of the earth the last 4 years and now the same is true about fw800 too
for the last 2 years..

its no big deal, just buy a 3$ sata to pata adapter, buy a new sata burner + there u go
u can use practically any burner with a g4
it would be more difficult to find one that ISNT compatible

my last burner was .. i think .. 3 years old ... and then it was no problem to find PATA stuff.

lets see, maybe i go for a second hand .. though it would be a joke when you look at the prices of a new one. :)

its best to find someone who is buying alot of 2nd hand equiipment.. i know theres alot of private re-sellers that sell this type of equipment on craigslist or other classified ads
they buy bulk old computers per skid and then sell off the parts peice by peice i bought a bunch of cdroms for 5$-10$ each off a friend who does this
