wondering if we could put our heads together to get a proper timeline release dates for the original versions of logic

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logic_Pro#Early_Versions is very much incomplete in regard to this information. with vague references
and very little specific information.. perhaps i can cehck the documention and file dates from the files that we have here on the site?

doing a quick check, i see that the file dates on the .img file are from 2010... from the "logic audio 1" folder

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr98/articles/logic_audiopc.html v3.0 article dated april 1998
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug99/articles/logic4.htm v4.0 article dated august 1999

ahh here we are: from the v4.0 article:

Notator Logic v1.2 May 1993 http://www.soundonsound.com/Contents.php?Month=5&Year=1993 (not onsite)
Notator Logic Audio Dec 1993 (again, not onsite)
Logic v2.0 Aug 1995 http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1995_articles/aug95/emagiclogic2.html
Logic v2.5 Oct 1995 http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1995_articles/oct95/emagiclogic.html
Logic Audio v2.5 Feb 1996 http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1996_articles/feb96/logic2.5.html
Logic Audio v2.5 PC Nov 1996 http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1996_articles/nov96/emagiclogic25.html
Logic Audio v3.0 Jan 1998 http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan98/articles/logicaudio.htm
Logic Audio v3.0 PC Apr 1998 http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr98/articles/logic_audiopc.html
Logic Audio v3.5 Oct 1998 http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct98/articles/logicplatinum.html

this is the info i was after;) well close to it anyway. these are article publish dates. not software release dates. but htey provide a little insight.

I was a Logic Audio v3.0 user back in the days...

Logic Goes Mac

During this super-charged period of computer/software development, Emagic took Notator/Logic to the Mac.  V 1.6 was released early in 1993.  It appeared to be just like the Atari version.  A year later, in the cold of winter 1994, version 1.7 was released that was designed for Mac System 7, required 8MB of Ram, and at minimum a 68030 Mac. A whopping 600 MB hard drive was the recommended minimum.   This was a ground breaking event as audio had finally arrived in Logic.

Audio was delivered in the young Logic via the DAE (Digidesign audio engine) made by the developers of Sound Tools (right around the time they changed the name to Pro Tools).  The major audio cards for Logic were the AudioMedia I and II, SoundTools 2, and the new Session 8 all by Digidesign.  Depending on what you had installed, you could expect 4 to 16 tracks of audio.
from http://tweakheadz.com/history-of-notator-and-logic3/

yep;)
so this is  the first version (v1.7) to allow audio recording?

Maybe this is a little off-topic. Back in the logic 3.x days I was a PC user. I bought an guillemot Isis that came with Logic Audio Pro Isis version 3.6 . It was a 16 audiotracks and the synth from the soundcard was integrated and up to 36 mb sampler via ram expansions. 4 stereo buses and 2 stereo masters.  It even had dsp from the Isis to make chorus, flangers eq, (?) ; but inserts were only direct x compatible (no VST).  But last time I tested waves mercury 5 it worked most of them as directx but SSL.

I tested logic 3.5 gold 4.5 and 5 platinum for pc. I kept recording on Logic Pro Isis 3.6 and mixing on a cracked 4.5 and later with a terratec dmx6fire2496 on logic 5.5.1 . I remember that was a good idea to install cubase to use logic, because cubase made Asio drivers for most soundcards. Asio 1.0 and 2.0 if you installed Sx (from memory).

My mac friends were still using cracked 4.x version while win users had 5.x cracked.
Most of masterclass about looping, mixing and producing I recieved back on the days were on logic 4.5 mac.
The envy of having 5.x working on pc made a lot mac users to buy an emagic license...
That's the reason I have a dongle now!

says here that v1.6 is the version from "early 1993"  8)  8)  8)

just rechecked our archive from the enabler logic anthology and it does indeed contain:
v1.1
v1.6
v1.7.2
v1.7.3

amazing so this v1.6 is the version from the time period im looking for and is available to all..
appears to only be 10mb or so, and from what i understand it should work with the dongle emulator!

Logic top of the line is platinum.
There was also gold and silver versions, with more features than my "copper" logic pro Isis 3.6. I think silver had 24 tracks and more than 4 buses. , at least from logic 3.x to 5.x.
From 6 to this day there are logic pro and express lines, and the cheap one is called garageband....

There are some logic silver/gold versions that dint need a dongle dongle. I mean you can use it on M- audio soundcards. As protools only work on digi hardware, this logic "m-audio" only works on midiman hardware as AP 24/96
I think it was working for the delta series... But I can be wrong.

that's an earlier version. EMAGIC Logic PRO Isis v. 3.6 is the only one > 3.5 and < 4.x. . You can search in S.O.S. About Guillemot Isis to "date" 3.5, my 3.6 and 4.5. Late nineties.

I wanted to notice about Logic Audio Delta for m-audio also. I think it was a 3.x or 4.x and
they dont need dongle, I hope.

There was also a Logic "free" called "fun" in version 5. Maybe there were some "free" versions in 3.x and 4.x.

I have a boxed Logic 2.0 for Atari complete with manual and dongle. Awesome case in plastic 8-)

I still do pretty much all my MIDI-work on my Atari 1040STe with C-Lab/Emagic Notator 3.21.
It's a kick-ass sequencer that hasn't been surpassed by anything.

ptl45g: thank u, yes i am well aware. i was comparing the difference in versions of the same time period.. on the mac notator was at version 1.6 in 1993, yet, on atari, seemed to have progressed to v3.21 as you see illustrated here by tis screenshot

Notator was never on the Mac or any other platform than the Atari. The first version of Logic was called "Notator Logic", probably to show off the Notator legacy.
Alot of stuff in Logic is directly moved over from Notator. The big difference, obviously, is that Logic is object based and Notator is a pattern sequencer.

Screenshot from the Notator Logic on Atari demosong:

BTW, it's a pity that Atari made such a poor job of marketing their computers in North America. Here in Europe they are as easy to find as old G3 and G4 Macs.

Atari TT? Falcon? It is more advanced than an ST. It was a BEAST of machine that Atari did not spread. As the last Amigas...

On parallels universes we could be writing in a forum called TOS1.02 Lives! or Workbench Lives!
The other 680x0 machines died too soon.  :-[ :( :'(
All those machines seem to me more powerful than Macintosh of the same age.
Amiga with all the coprocessors seem as powerful as a Next Cube

Take a look on the first video editor. Videotoaster for Amiga http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Toaster

i think its more about stupid people considering them trash + useless + disposing of them
or perhaps not even worth selling,, which is why u dont see any ads for these things, macs u can find for sale alot..
 atari.. like a unicorn;)
